View Full Version : People destroying classic game systems?

I am currently watching the donation video for Season 7 of Is It a Good Idea to Microwave this. They had already microwaved some Atari games (including a copy of ET i believe) as well as a Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and NES Zapper. This season they got a Sega Game Gear, Atari 2600, a Genesis game, and an NES. It terrifies me that people would send in these items for them to destroy. These valuable collectors items are being ruined for a petty web show. The 2600 is only a CX2600A, but it's still saddening to see this is where the thing is going to end its life.
Here is the donations video, the Genesis game/Game Gear is at 2:16, the Atari is at 5:05, and the NES is in the introduction for their newest one (the airbag one)

Idiots. Don't they have something better to do than to waste time by destroying different objects?

Aparrently not. Plus I believe they live in Boston, which is only an hours drive away from me, not even.
The zapper was an orange one, BTW

I can't help but feel appalled.
I mean, everyone is given their own time to waste, and I can certainly relate to a certain fascination with heating things to the point where they would explode or melt... but 50,000 views? I am flabbergasted. I would think that the charm would wear off after the first two or three episodes...
Can't blame these guys for sticking with a schtick that works, though, just bugs me that it does work.

I'll admit to watching some of their episodes last year, more out of mild amusement... but it did get old pretty quick overall. And I'm glad I stopped before I saw the sacrilege amped up. :P

Have you seen any of the Will it Blend stuff? They blended Guitar Hero III, with the guitar. Plus iphones and other stuff just to promote their blender.
Guitar Hero III.

I get that it's all just possessions so you shouldn't be too attached to them, but it's still ridiculous to be that wasteful.

You know, maybe the items were broke and couldn't be repaired.
That's what I tell myself, anyway. >_>

Hey, it works for them, why not continue doing it?
Luckily for collectors, the rare stuff always ends up with the people who know how to treat it. A few NESes and common Ataris sent for a spin in the microwave won't hurt anything. It's not like they are microwaving Famicom Disk Systems and Neo-Geo games, the latter of which I could see happening, honestly.

What the hell? I remember watching one of these videos and being disgusted by how they destroy things just for entertainment. Those games and systems could have been used for something, even if they were broken (parts). They need to find something to keep themselves entertained instead of wasting time destroying perfectly good things.

They started this show ages ago with regular household items such as light bulbs and toothpaste. They make money off it. It is wasteful and contributes to air pollution a bit but they haven't destroyed anything rare. If they microwaved a good guitar I'd probably start to get pissy though.

I guess it's not as bad as "What burns better? A Rembrandt or a Raphael?" but still...

I'm not even opening links and giving them any extra advertisement. Folks, hide your classic game systems! :)

My favorite are the ones who buy *new* systems and then destroy them.
You just tossed $200-400 dollars down the drain to make a Youtube video? Well, alright then...

It's just not very exciting to microwave those things. Microwaving light bulbs, cans of ether, or shotgun shells would be much more entertaining.

From what I gather from people who do it, they advertise the smashing months before hand the get people to donate. They save double of what they need. Then they use that money to buy a (whatever here) to smash and a second for themselves.

Think of all the systems that are sitting in landfills? You cannot get to upset over this stuff. Collect what you collect save/sell what has value and be entertained by this stuff in the microwave!

I agree, I have never heard about these guys before, but now I have watched three or four of their videos. Very amusing!

Don't watch that then if the microwaving stuff gets to you.
It's just stuff, it's fun to watch stuff get destroyed (which means yes, I'm a recovering Gallagher fan). The "Will It Blend" guy is a riot. I have nothing at all against these videos.

Donations or not, that is still tossing money down the crapper for the sake of Youtube entertainment. :shameful:
If they were going to dissect the thing to see how it was built/work, I might understand.

Honestly, it is retarded. Sorry but this is what qualifies as entertainment? I guess if you are borded, and have no imagination this works. Good for you!
Hey its a free country, and they can do it all they want. But it is still really stupid in my openion.

look at it this way for every system that dies another systems value increases?

I try not to let it get to me. I see it as "it's their problem, not mine".
At times it does make me wonder if they are bored beyond belief. And at the same time, it makes me appreciate my consoles and items more and more.
