View Full Version : Is there any way to disable Macrovision on PS2 w/o a modchip?

I'm upgrading all my consoles to RGB output. For the PS2, I'm connecting through a component -> RGB converter box. (I don't have component input on my RGB monitor) Games look great, both standard mode and 480p, but during DVD playback the converter box triggers the Macrovision. I know most PS2 modchips can disable macrovision but I really don't want to install a modchip just for occasional game room DVDs. I could still switch my cables back to s-video connection for DVDs, but that's inconvenient too.

Is there any Gameshark, Action Replay, Media Manager, Swap Magic, etc. boot disc that can disable Macrovision? Or maybe some homebrew for the MC Boot?

I also have my Nuon connected through the component -> RGB converter and it has the same problem. If anyone knows of a macrovision workaround for the Samsung N-501 that would work for me too.

Thanks!

You could buy a PS2 RGB cable. Or would that still trigger the macrovision?

I don't think RGB SCART supports 480p progressive mode on the PS2. I think you have to use component for 480p.

I think I'd prefer to just install a DVD player, since they're pretty cheap these days... I've heard stories that using a PS2 as your DVD player is asking for trouble with it in the long term, except maybe for a once or twice a year playback.

As for modchips disabling the MV on it, I'm not sure if they do or not, their primary purposes are to kill the region code lockouts and allow one to play backups.

I don't want to make room for a DVD player in my game room.... every nook of shelf space already has a console sitting on it. :) I'd probably only play DVDs once or twice a month so I'm not too worried about wear on the PS2.

I know the messiah and modbo modchips will disable macrovision, probably others too. I don't pirate and I already have a Japanese PS2 so I'd only be installing the modchip to disable the macrovision. Probably not worth the modchip price and afternoon of soldering though. If there's no boot disc solution I guess I'll just swap the PS2 back to an s-video cable when I want to play a DVD.

I think that's just a region-free boot disc with some color correction for RGB SCART. I can't find any mention that it will disable the macrovision. If someone can confirm that it will disable macrovision that would solve my problem...
