View Full Version : TG16 CD-ROM Optical Assembly

I asked this question a few years ago, but I'll make a new thread rather than reviving that one.

Is there anywhere to get replacement optical assemblies for the TG16 CD-ROM unit? Not the Turbo Duo, but the portable-CD-player-like-unit that docks with the original TG16.

I've found places to get the laser (KSS-162A), but my issue is that one of the gears has broken and so the worm gear no longer moves. Thus, I need the entire assembly (unless just the gear can be gotten somewhere).

So, are there any readily available pieces of equipment that use compatible/identical assemblies? Is there any place that sells assemblies?

Thanks

Go to a thrift store and look for the oldest Sony Walkmans you can find. They usually contain the assembly and even the laser.

I'll have to check this out.

I read about a few assemblies that used the identical laser, mostly in older Sony equipment, and they all seemed to have a different shape than did the one used in the TG16 drive. At least, so far as I could tell from the pictures.

I guess I'll just pick up any cheap Discman units from about the right time period. Any idea what models are most promising? Most any of them from late 80's - early 90's?

The Discman D-34 and the CDROM NEC CDR-35D had the same assembly.

The PC-FX uses a HOP-E1, the Duo uses a HOP-M3.

Where did you find places that sell the KSS-162A? I only find the KSS-220A online. I think they are interchangeable (not 100% sure).
