My buddy has a chance to get a Laseractive with the Sega adapter for a decent price. As his friend though I know he wants it because its cool and it would replace his Sega Genesis, CD, and Laser Disc Player. Though I am worried that once something breaks he will lose a lot of money and time trying to replace that again. My question is does the Laseractive hold up well with normal usage or is it just better to have three separate things? Thanks for your time.

The Laseractive is the only system I've ever had that failed on me besides one of my Game Gear systems.

My LaserActive's internal power supply blew up while playing a Genesis game. luckily the game still worked. It smelled so bad. I would only get a LaserActive if you want to play the LaserActive exclusive games. It's very large and bulky as well.

I can share the nature of my pets? Why didn't anyone tell me this before? :?

I own a Laseractive with the Sega PAC, and it broke on me as well; though, in my case the problem is with the PAC itself and not the unit. Plus mine should be fixable if I ever get around to it.

I would say go for it, as long as you have room (under your dvd player or something), and if it is a good deal as you said. That said, just tell your friend to keep his Genesis in his closet just in case.

The problem is he is in a dorm, the way to get rid of the other stuff is that he wants me to buy that stuff from him so he can get the laseractive. To me even if they take up space why not use something that works well now.

Get the LA for a good price and pass it along. There's no reason to use it regularly (unless you really, REALLY like Rocket Coaster, which I could understand).

As a laserdisc player itself, the video quality is subpar, and you will be relying on your tv's comb filter to do some heavy clean up, so if your tv doesn't have a decent comb filter, you are sol on the Laseractive in terms of good picture quality. They used cheaper parts to build it too. It has a high failure rate among the laserdisc communities. If he just wants one for bragging rights, then yea, sure, get one, but honestly as a gaming system, let alone a standard LD player, it is honestly not worth the asking price, regardless of a few exclusive LD titles it had going for it.

I've got one with the Sega pac and it has problems reading SegaCD games. If I put a disc in, it'll start but it usually freezes up after 1-2 minutes. Has no problems playing audio cd's, LD's, or Genesis cartridges though. Don't know if this is a problem with the player's laser or the Sega pac.

Unless you're *really* interested in playing LaserActive games, it isn't worth it. It's big, breaks easily, and like PC-E Hell said, it's just not a good LD player. I'm 4 games shy of having a complete US LaserActive collection and I barely touch it. Although I do have to say the optical audio sounds great, especially on Genesis games.

I say just buy a Sega CDX and a stand-alone LD player instead.

^This... pretty much. Sega Genesis and Sega CD are common and easy to replace, as are TurboGrafix consoles. LaserActive wasn't designed to last this long, and they're failing. It's sad, but true. They're also rare and go for lots of money. Not worth it unless you are into the games that you can only get on a LaserActive.
