So I have a few 2600s and stacks of games that were picked up cheaply, but have never had an old enough tv to use them. I just recently bought an adapter on ebay and started testing them out today. A lot of games work fine, but a bunch of them have a screen at the start but won't let you move or do anything. All of my space invaders copies won't let me press the button to shoot.

What am I doing wrong with this?

To start many games, you have to push the reset button on the system

I tried pressing the reset button, which made space wars work, but breakout and asteroids won't work on multiple carts.. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Breakout: You have to first push the reset switch on the console, then push the fire button on the paddle to launch the ball (you are playing with a paddle, correct? :hmm:).

Asteroids: In the default game mode the asteroids do not move diagonally, so the game has probably started, but if you were expecting the asteroids to move diagonally you have to switch to a different game mode (game 4 is the first one of these).

If you can hear music and sound effects on Asteroids, then the game has in fact started.

Thanks everyone!

The problem with breakout was that I was using a joystick, not a paddle, lol.

Okay, then what happened with Asteroids?

Well, I was happy that breakout worked, and forgot to try that out..

Asteroids still won't work. The screen comes up with these balls that are blinking different colors. It does the same thing with multiple asteroids carts.

I would love to see a screenshot of that.

I'll try and take a picture of it.

Ok, I figured out the problem: the reset button.

You really have to slam it down and press the a button really fast for some games. I got asteroids to work.

Maybe your unit is a bit worn out. For me it works pretty easy. Worn out joysticks and system buttons will also be less responsive than ones that were not used much.
