What is your strategy for the second level boss of R-Type? I don't know its name, so I just snapped a picture. My strategy is to sit right in the middle of those tubes at the top. I'll sit close to the main body of the boss and line my force pod up with the eye. Sitting here protects me from the flying snake thing and the bullets that it shoots.

My problem is that about half the time I'll either get too close to the boss and collide with it (and die) or I won't get close enough to it and the snake will hit me as it flies around. What do you do?

I'm playing the PC Engine version BTW.

I park in the lower left side of the boss until there is an opening, then I fly up directly above him and drop lasers into the opening eye thingie. I retreat to the lower left side when things get hairy.

It helps if you have a force unit on top of you at this point, because while you are bombing his eye thingie, you get attacked from above.

Oh yeah, the weapon to have is the diagonal laser bouncy thingie...then you can shoot him right in the eye when you are above him.

edit: from where you are in the picture you look a little close to me, I shoot from about half an inch up and to the left w the diagonal laser.

I use c0ldb33r's strategy. If you position yourself perfectly, the boss can't touch you.

Same here. Having an orb helps. The position in the photo looks fine, though you could get a pixel or two lower and to the left so the force touches the eye when it opens. Hiding in the lower left corner works too, if you want to be a panzy.

There's also this method, but I've never been able to do it right on TG: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cp6LkMEBdJ8 @ 1:50
Looks like I was firing the force too late. I like sitting over the eye better, anyway.

I can think of on more method; camping in the lower left corner until the boss times out.

I haven't played enough R-Type to get a fix on it, but in the GB version the force pod seems to head straight for that eye and finishes it off quickly. I think the goal here is still to get your pod into the center and wait over on the left for fun times.

Yeah, that works on the GB and is really quite easy to do, making this boss really easy, but I haven't been able to get that to work on the TG16... it's a bit more difficult there. It's still not that hard, but it's not "shoot out the force thing, move down, and wait" easy. :)

On the SMS version, I sat in the upper left and just used the laser to get him from a diagonal. I would just move/adjust my ship as needed when the snake thing would come around.
