The Subject says it all. Just curious to see what everybodies favorite genre of game they like.

Mine would be between 2:

First Person Shooters
Massive Multi-player Online Role-Playing-Games

Maybe DP can make this into a poll

I always prefer a well done action title, whether thats an FPS, a side-scrolling adventure, or a fighting game. I know it covers 3 genres, but I can't pick just one...

I'd have to say that my favorite genre is RPG. I don't exactly have as much time as I used to, so I don't play RPG's as much, but they are still my favorite.

RPGs
shmups/run n gun
Adventure
Puzzle

In that order.

Office-work sims.

And after that, either shmups or giant-robots-with-guns games.

I used to be huge on RPGs. But these days, the storylines have gotten too complex, the battle systems have gotten too arbtitrary, and the storylines have gotten cliche.

I probably tie for my favorite genre, between platformers and shmups (especially space-based shmups). The always offer a challenge, there's usually some level of unpredictability, and you don't have to memorize a manual to play. :D

Puzzle games, games where you put together a puzzle and especially when you have to race someone. But they make very few of those , so I must be the only person.

RPG
Adventure (Space Quest, Kings Quest, Monkey Island, where are you?!)
Action/Adventure
FPS (I should just say Counterstrike, it's all I ever play)
Puzzle (DAMN YOU MONKEY BALL 2, YOU'RE FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE)

Kim Possible

Platform
Adventure
Strategy (including puzzle games)

Arqueologia_Digital: Did you just change your avatar? I do recognize that character, (and remember most of the levels from that game) but I don't remember the name...good to see people still remember the old days of early VGA graphics.

Ah, favorite games?

FPS, most types. My favorite period for shooters was 1993-1994: Not too primitive, full of character, but not so far into the game that the Hype Machine and all the rest of the techno-BS started killing the simplicity of DOOM's game mechanics (IMO). 1995 and 1996 did produce two standout games -- you know their names -- but after that things started going downhill (for me, at least). Possibly it has something to do with the fact that after Quake people (including iD) started frantically rushing to find something that was a FPS, but made sense. Sense + shooter = ? Current stop: WW2 battle recreations!

3rd person games...this genre has enough standouts on the N64 alone to make it my second true favorite. Though I've been playing more sidescrollers recently, I would lie to say that I didn't have fun with both N64 Zelda games, Castlevania 64 and Mario 64. Heck, I even had fun with Mission: Impossible. Highly underrated category. On another note...looks like this genre's about to get many more standouts in the new Prince of Persia game, Shinobi 2 (whatever its title turns out to be) and the second Maximo game. Maybe there's even room for a 3D Ghosts'n Goblins game...who knows?

2D sidescrollers...Not much to say about this category. Right now these are my favorite type of game to collect, and I enjoy playing them quite a bit. Less fun than FPSes? The only thing hurting them, in my eyes, is the fact that you just don't have multiplayer with many of 'em. Emulation's starting to help that, but internet support (i.e. Kaliera) is still pretty shaky, if what I've heard is correct. Maybe a project for a future port of MAME or whatever emu you're using.

Vertical shooters...Ah, I'm pretty good at this, but then my darn hands mess up and I've hit something. I don't have a single good shooter in my collection at the moment, but I can tell the good (Battle Bakraid) from the bad (Zero...wait, everybody here knows that. Right? RIGHT!?) Probably one of the most underfollowed genres of the highest quality.

RPGs, no explanation needed here. Wishing I got into Phantasy Star 1 before 4, and worked my way forward instead of back. Ah well.

Fighters...not really one of my favorites since I'm more of a co-op minded type (though Last Blade 2 is a favorite, I'm just not well enough versed in this area of history yet. On the way from Japan, though, are two Neo Geo AES carts: Samurai Spirits 1 & 2).

And...everything else! I know how to have fun with anything from a decent Tetris or Arkanoid clone to unreleased RPGs (Hero Quest on the NES in this case) so I really have trouble claiming a "favorite" series.

Sir, your cryptic speech is overmuch for a rustic type such as me. Please name these standout games. What, Quake II? Half-Life?

I assume you mean Zero Wing (all your base), as Zero Gunner 2 is pretty good IMO. But Zero Wing is a horizontal scrolling shmup. Anyway, it's always nice to see another shooter enthusiast, as the world is already awash in 3D platform adventure RPG fans. Keep your finger on the trigger, rookie!

Have to go with "arcade", which may seem a bit vague, but for me sums it up perfectly. Classic 70s and early 80s arcade games (thank you, MAME) as well as classic early 80s console games pretty much sum it up for me.

I also love "action/adventure/platform" games as well, especially anything associated with Metroid. Also, I used to be not too fond of NES platform games back in the day, but now I love them and can't get enough.

As far as my least favorite types of games are concerned, you've got pretty much all sports games (with a few notable exceptions to the rule), RPGs (which I'm still trying to get into but just can't seem to, for the life of me), and all fighting games (which I truly loathe).

Definitely shmups (horizontal, vertical, 3/4 overhead - I don't care) come first, followed by 2-D sidescrollers and platformers, then come run-n-guns (both horizontal and vertical), beat-em-ups and the odd text adventure after that.

The only two kinds I have an active dislike for are fps and sports games. There's not a single fps that I like, and outside of Blades Of Steel and the odd 2600 sports title, I can't stand sports games either.

Other than that, it's a mixed bag. Puzzle games are good sometimes, I like RPGs but I simply don't have the patience to play through them anymore, one-on-one fighters I can take or leave (mostly leave) and 3-D games of any kind... I haven't liked a whole lot of them, but there are a few standouts (and no, I don't consider games like Space Harrier and After Burner to be 3-D... when I say 3-D I'm usually referring to anything with polygons). Whatever else I can't remember right now... I can't remember right now.

Strategy games (because I'm impatient... and I suck)

Racing games (not into nascar types of racers)

I also enjoy recers. But arcade style 80's early 90's racers. Where the fields were generated in Pseudo-3D with objects coming at you and cars that you had to pass and crashing into stuff on the side and flipping and the cool tune in Rad Racer that was later used in the Strong Bad email, "Japanese Cartoon".

Not the newer ones mostly because they're too hard to turn and use. Too much braking to turn tightly. Mario Kart is a good one. Super Off-Road with the top down is also good. I also like thse top down Spy Hunter styled games.

The adventure/RPG a.k.a "hack'n'slash".
I am a new gamer so I have not tired of this genre.
I am to to old to waste a single minute on turn based console RPG's.
