IGN just posted some new info on MGS3 that I'm kind of surprised about...
MGS3 will not use a radar. Is it me or does this announcement make the game now sound impossible to play. A big part of the game is the use of stealth to avoid enemies and if you are playing in the open woods with absolutly no idea what side an enemy will come from how could you possibly not be seen. I hope they add something similar to the radar, because if not I'd probably die every five seconds.
What do you guys think about this?

The thing I hated about the radar was that I was watching it more than I was watching the game.
I'm *all* for dropping it.
Have you played Splinter Cell? Similar game, no radar. And it was a blast to play. Way better than MGS2 in this humble gamer's opinion.
It all comes down to how good the camera is. If the camera control is good enough then it shouldn't really matter that the radar is gone. IMO, though, the camera system in MGS2 is a mess (having to switch back and forth to first-person mode sucks!) so I wonder how MGS3 will turn out in this regard.

Radar added a stupid level of unrealism. Obviously if you tried to play through MGS or MGS2 without the radar you'd get slaughtered, but I'm sure Konami isn't gonna blow it with MGS3 and make it impossible to play without knowing exactly where every enemy is.

it's a good thing radar is removed, but it ISN'T REMOVED, it's just turned off by default, you can turn it on if u want, at least that is what they said at the E3

I'm just going by what was stated in the article above. If you have an article to backup what you said it would be appreciated. I'd be more than happy to find out that you have a choice of using the radar.

lose translation from GamePro Germany interview with Hideo Kojima, last issue AFTER E3:
Kojima: "I recommend it to all players to shut off the radar and play without it and try to hear or see things, this will give u a far better experience and a more realistic feel"
in the article:
"although there will be a radar available, you should really turn it off...."

Thats cool then...I hope that interview is true and they have not changed their mind as my article says. I have no problem trying it without the radar, but if it gets too hard then I can at least turn it on.
