View Full Version : True DP Confessions: Super Castlevania 4

I have a confession to make: I don't like Castlevania 4 and never have. Each time I see this game mentioned it gets a level of praise I don't understand.
I first encountered the beast in 1992.. My initial reaction wasn't anything near "super", I thought the game was a significant step down from the Castlevania 1/2/3 I'd been nursed on. Nothing like what I imagined 16-bit Castlevania would be. The sprites were huge (not at all similar to the NES games), and the gameplay generally didn't feel very Castlevania to me. I didn't hate it, but I was thoroughly disappointed.
After that years would go by.. I'd play game after game that made the jump to 16-bit in style and it all left me wondering how the mighty Castlevania stumbled through the door with seemingly everyone loving it all the same.
I can't bring myself to hate it but I do consider it the worst 16-bit Castlevania. Oh forgive me DP!! :bawling:
Well, I feel better already. This DP confessionals thing really works!

OOooh. Video game confessions... Interesting...
You're not a criminal for not liking Super Castelvania 4. I think its more criminal that Nintendo managed to slam the word "Super" onto the begining of the title thus making people think there is a Super Castlevania I-III
Some things I would like to confess:
- I first played Super Mario Bros. 3 when I got All-Stars in 1994 and finally beat SMB3 a few months ago...
- I despise the critically acclaimed PC game, Myst.
- I played Contra for the first time a week ago.
- I LOVE NIGHT TRAP!

I love Super Castlevania 4? That's true.
I bash Nintendo because I don't like them as a company, but I actually want a Wii because it's got a small handful of games I want to have which no other system will probably ever receive. I still haven't bought one though because I can't see myself justifying the purchase when I want less than 10 good games.
I also love the Nintendo, Super Nintendo, and every single Nintendo handheld. Even though I think the DS is a great system I bash it because it's Nintendo's current portable console and I don't like Nintendo as a company. I have more than 30 DS games, three of which I dislike, all others I didn't like I've sold.
I most NIS titles. I love Prinny Can I Really Be The Hero. Other than Prinny, this is a company that doesn't know how to make a good game. They're like the Koei of tactical RPGs and Disgaea is their Dynasty Warriors(La Pucelle was out first, but Disgaea is the most well known -- they're all the same though and boring, no challenge, no strategy, terrible games.)

Its understandable man, I feel the same way about them now. Especially NoA since they basically abandoned their old fans in order to adopt a world wide all age group market where nintendo and other companies will push all these useless titles while the old fans wish that they would not be ignored.

- I despise the critically acclaimed PC game, Myst.
Before I go Usher Raymond and give you all my confessions, let's be serious here for a moment. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, likes Myst, save for people who think that boring multimedia experiences count as games.
Onto my confessions:
-I bought a Nintendo Wii on the day it came out and have barely played with it since; I absolutely hate the thing and think it's an abomination of a system -- and this is coming from a Nintendo loyalist who owned a friggin' Virtual Boy.
-I HATED Super Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess.
-During my original ownership of a Super Nintendo, I only owned about twenty games and somehow did NOT have Link to the Past, F-Zero, StarFox, OR Super Metroid.
-I have stepped foot in an arcade maybe three times in my life.
-Sunset Riders is one of my ten favorite games of all time.
-I like Sonic the Hedgehog's 3D games.

I've never understood why gamers are so insecure about products like Wii Fit, etc. 'Hardcore' games aren't going anywhere, the sales of GTA, Gears of War, and others will not be ignored. In fact, I think growing the numbers of gamers is a great, more buyers means potentially more niche stuff coming out.
Anyways, Nintendo this generation has already put out a Zelda, soon three console Marios, Mario Kart, and more. When did they have games more 'hardcore' than those? Nintendo may not be hardcore right now, but honestly when where they?
Getting back on track, I think SCIV got a lot of love back in the daycause it really pushed what the SNES was capable of. Things like the rotating room and jumping from chandelier to chandelier were mind blowing at the time. I have some pretty fond memories of the game, and I hope I love it again when I eventually replay it.

True confessions, eh? Ooo, ooo, me next!
-Haven't played the original SMB for a couple of years, I could never get back into it like I did when I was a kid.
-"Bad" sequels I thought were better than the original game, Castlevania 2, and SMB2.
-Along the same line, I owned Mega Man 1-5 when they came out and I love them all almost equally; MM2 would be first, after that I would have a hard time deciding which one is next.
-The SNES was the last Nintendo console I ever owned, I bought a Genesis along with the SNES I got for Christmas in 1991/92, bought a PS1 in 1997.
-Never played Chrono Trigger or Earthbound until a couple of years ago; I wasn't that impressed. My fav SNES RPG is Secret of Mana, mostly because of nostaglia.
-I enjoy bad games more than I should, partly because of irony and because I truly find them at least decent. I find the Color Dreams' games Menace Beach, Secret Scout, etc highly entertaining.
I'll think of some more later.

oooo confessions ;) here are some of my little confessions:
- I, too, do not like Super Castlevania IV...
- I also do not like any FPS's...at all (past Wolfenstein 3D and Doom)..
- I don't care for any MMO's....
- I, too, like Night Trap....and Dracula Unleashed...and SnowJob....and Sherlock Holmes lol
- I still consider Lunar:EB the best 16-bit RPG
- I bought an N64 on its Japanese launch day for a hefty price...and still hate the system to this day (its my least played system).......
- I never liked any 3D Mario game....or Sonic :(

I liked CV4, however I didnt think it looked all that great. And this was a day and age when F-Zero and Pilotwings ooh'd and aah'd me. I thought CV4 looked pretty crappy graphically to be honest in comparison to all the other SNES titles that were coming out.

There should be no shame in that. The games got pretty decent critical reviews from professional sources, and I personally like them as well.
My confession is that I've never beaten Super Mario Bros. 2 or 3. Well, I've beaten 3 with warps, but 2 is just impossible to me.

-I think Mario Sunshine is better than Galaxy.
-I think God of War is awful and repetitive with great art direction but is mostly a jerkoff session for bloodthirsty gamers and PS fanboys.
-I own 2 PS3's and I dont really like the system. I use it mostly for PS2 games cause I feel the current PS3 lineup blows.
-Little Big Planet is an awful platformer and I love good platformers.
-I have never played a 3D GTA game for more than 5 minutes before I was bored to tears.
-I have almost no complaints about Microsoft about their OS's or game systems
-I have completed 1 3D RPG ever(Valkyria Chronicles unless you count Pape Mario 1/2)
-Atari Jaguar has great FPS's
-The New Batman game isn't very good and I feel it is only praised due to the new Batman love affair every person has with the character since the new movie.
-I cant name any exclusive XBOX(180) games.
-(going back to Castlevania games) I think Dracula X is a bad game.

At least your reasons for not liking CV4 are understandable. I may not be able to relate much because I love CV4, but there's no denying that it's quite different from the NES games.
What grinds my gears is when people lambast CV4 solely for being too easy (which it is), yet these are the same people that think Rondo of Blood is the greatest thing since sliced bread when I personally feel they're both roughly as easy. CV4 has a few tricky points towards the end, as does Rondo, and everything else in those games is a pushover. Or worse yet, these people often worship SotN too, which is absolutely mind-numbingly easy, even in comparison to CV4. Seriously, people, get your priorities straight and your arguments right. Personally, I love all three games despite them being too easy.

The N64 games aren't really "good" but they have atmosphere and I always enjoy them at least a bit.
I never really got hooked by SotN, although I ought to sit down and play through it sometime.
Super CV IV isn't the first game I'm likely to play, but I like a lot of it. Mode 7 cheese, not so much - like hanging from the whip for what feels like half a minute while the room rotates. That's boring and plain bad game design. Konami struggled a bit to make their Mode 7 gimmicks translate well into gameplay - Axelay is a prime example of this. Usually pretty, but awkward.
I should mention that I've never been the biggest fan of the FC / NES Contra, but I find myself playing it often (via Contra 4), so I dunno what's going on there. It's pretty solid despite its quirks.

Legacy of the Darkness is legitimately good. People were just being bitter because 1) it's not 2D or side-scrolling, 2) it's not SotN, and 3) they were frustrated that the first N64 Castlevania was basically incomplete, giving them the feeling that they were duped by Konami into wasting their money for essentially the same game twice.

I have to say that I love Super Castlevania IV. It has some of the best graphics on the SNES (IMO), great music and perfect presentation. Though I admit that the linearity of it isn't desirable compared to Castlevania III, it is still one of the best action/adventure platformers ever released. Gameplay is king!
Interesting story though, I wanted this game for my 11th birthday, but my mom wouldn't let me have it because she didn't like the box artwork. Instead, I got Final Fantasy II. I must say, Final Fantasy II/IV still trumps Castlevania IV as one of my favourite games by a longshot. I finally got Castlevania IV back in 1998 or so, and played the crap out of it. In fact, the most usage I got out of it was to experiment with my Game Genie, producing many interesting codes (http://www.snescentral.com/0/0/0/0002/gamegenie1.txt).

Which is why we ought to say no to the pointless showoff moments in SCV4. Thankfully there aren't many of them (the splitting mud men that slow down the system, the chandeliers, and especially the rotating room are the only ones I think really deserve derision). They are fun to watch the first time though, so I guess they aren't a total waste.

Hmm, this is fun. Personally, I liked Castlevania Bloodlines much better than Castlevania IV. It is a better game.
I'm a Jaguar fan hardcore.
Loved the Sega 32-X more than the Saturn.
I despise Sony and haven't really liked Playstation since the first.
3DO Rocks!
Wario is awesomeness.
I miss Bonk. :(
Oh, and I really, Really, REALLY HATE Super Mario Brothers 1 & 2 as well as Super Mario Land, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. Love Mario Bros. and SMB 3 though.

I've never been able to get past the rotating room in SC4, but I like the game.
I could never get into any of the 8-bit Super Mario Bros. games
I don't like any 2D Zelda game
I think the original Metroid is mediocre at best
I got a 32X when it first came out and never regretted it.
I still play Halo Custom Edition on a daily basis

When I first played SCV IV I thought the rotating room was one of the coolest thing I've ever seen at that point. The rotating room is laggy though, and I've died more than a few times, because the game slows down to a crawl a few points.
Another confession:
- Similar to kedawa, I've never cared for the original Metroid. Super Metroid on the other hand is one of the best game I've ever played.

I don't think the chandeliers belong in there. I mean, I'm just as irked by people going gaga over the mode 7 stuff as much as the next guy (especially because there are so many better things about CV4 to focus on), but the chandelier room still makes for a tense, uncomfortable segment, despite that I know it's easy, and it's still an interesting jumping sequence. In comparison, the rotating room has no gameplay at all considering you simply hang there, and the spinning room after that has virtually no level design as it's basically a straight empty path, with the occasional worthless skeleton or mindless jump.

Yeah, all those cools onscreen. Look sooo crappy. Especially compared to Genesis/TG16 games. Lots of colors onscreen and an impressive palette - how likes that kinda crap. Especially for an early release title.
I thought SCV4 was pretty decent BITD. The music was fantastic and the graphics/colors were down right impressive compared to the other systems at the time. The one thing I didn't really notice BITD, but saw recently (in a comparison thread)... is that the animation in the game is minimal. Like an NES game. Sure, the sprites were bigger and more of them, but the animation was greatly lacking.

I originally rented SCIV for my 12th Birthday Party, but of course everyone wanted to play Super Mario World...
I love the game. The music rocks and Stage 9 has my favorite Castlevania song (not sure of the official name) of all-time which I even wrote some non-sensical lyrics to.
Back to the topic at hand:
- Final Fantasy 7 and Chrono Trigger are my least favorite JRPGs of all-time
- Sonic 1, 3, Knuckles, and the first stage of Adventure 2 are the only games I like in that series
- I love Kasumi Ninja for Jaguar
- and Hydlide and Drakkhen
- and FMV games
- and the 3D0
- and the Channel F

This is fun, here's my list:
-Never been a fan of the Metroid-vania castlevania games, I actually love CV4 to death and is my favorite from the entire series, followed by CV3.
-I hate every single GTA game.
-I have never ever played a single Metal Gear game and have never had the desire to even try.
-I hate the N64, I was a huge NES and SNES fanboy and the N64 was nothing like these system to me.
-I beat Gunstar Heroes for the 1st time like 2 months ago (can't believe I waited so long, this game is awesome!)
-I love old school FPS games (Unreal Tournament, Quake III) and hate military FPS games like COD, Medal of Honor, Counter strike, etc (I hate games that try to be realistic)
-The only Resident Evil games I like are the Outbrake games (both files), don't know why but I love these 2 even though I'm not a fan of survival horror games.
-I hate [turn based] J-RPGs, but love action RPGs (Alundra, Beyond Oasis, etc) and also love strategic RPGs (Shining Force, Kartia, etc) I also love American PC RPGs (Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Elder Scrolls, etc)

Only thing that comes to mind for me is, I picked up Saint Sword a while back thinking, "It's a Taito game, it's gotta be good." Ugg.
-I was never a big fan of Chrono Trigger and I think Chrono Cross is a worthless RPG.
-I could never get past the bridge in the very beginning of MGS3.
-God of War is completely overrated and repetitive, but I liked God of War 2 and feel a lot of the problems from the original were fixed.
-I've never beaten any of the GTA games, yet I've spent countless hours playing all of them, except San Andreas because it blows.
-I've never beaten Castlevania 1 or 3.
-Hydlide isn't that bad of a game.

I never thought Castlevania IV had very good graphics. I think it's too brown and just not very well-drawn, and the mode 7 bits didn't do much for me. But I do like the game, more than any of the NES ones. Mainly because the controls are light years better. To this day, every time a new Castlevania comes out, I'm still irritated when it doesn't have directional attacking.
My big confession is that I can't stand the old (8-bit and 16-bit) Mega Man games at all. They just seem cheap and frustrating and I don't see anything redeeming about them; stage selection and getting weapons from boss fights does not a great game make. I was able to warm up to Mega Man 8, X4, and X5, but even then, they were far from my favorites. However, I really enjoyed Legends and the games that followed from it.
I also can't stand the GnG series, which has shitty controls (except for the SMS version).

This. Medal of Honor: Frontline, for example, has got to be the most boring FPS in history. Zero Tolerance for the Genesis, despite all its shortcomings due to hardware limitations, is a hundred times more entertaining.
-Post SNES, I think Nintendo is largely a sub-par developer.
-I'd rather play Shadowgate 64 than any Nintendo-developed N64 game. Indeed, I think it's BY FAR the finest game on the system.
-I think MM6 is the best game of the original series (although I haven't played much of 9.)
-Of the GB MM games, I think II is the best one, even though most people seem to hate it. I even like the music.
-I absolutely despise FF7.
-The only Sonic games I like are 3D Blast, Adventure, and Adventure 2.

- I too do not care for Castlevania IV. I don't hate it, but it's one of my least favorite Castlevania games.
- I never cared too much for any of the Contra games. Again, I don't hate them just never understood all the praise for them.
- I dislike all the God of War games.
- I dislike all the Metal Gear games.
- I hate online gaming.
- I love RPG's (my favorite genre) but I never enjoyed the Lunar series. Extremely boring games to me.
- I enjoy SMB2 more then SMB3
- I enjoy Zelda: Adventures of Link better then the original.
- I enjoy Castlevaina 2 more then 1 or 3
- Zelda Link to the Past is my least favorite Zelda game other then Twilight Princess.
- I've almost completely lost interest in modern gaming. I recenlty sold my PS3 & 360. I don't really care much for the Wii either, but I've had more fun with it then the other 2 systems.

By and large, the first of these that I quoted is true (save for the occassional gem here and there).
The second though: utter lies. 2 will always be the best Mega Man (though 6 is a LOT better than people give it credit for).
Castlevania IV was the last good Castlevania game.
The music is amazing. At the time, I hooked my SNES up to a tape deck and recorded the music using the sound test mode. Sometimes I would just sit there with my headphones being astounded by how the game used the 8 channels of the SNES. It was crazy good.

Castlevania 4 was the only SNES game I had for a long time, me and my friends have beat the heck out of it at least 30 times. I love it. I hate the NES games. I liked the first N64 game and Castlevania: SotN is my all time favorite, I have the Japanese saturn version that has bonus levels. I HATE the ps2 games! ...and I have not played much of the GBA games. I liked the PC Engine remake for the PSP and its cool that you can unlock the original version (although the screen is shrunk down, which sucks)

-I think Zelda 2 is better than Zelda 1
-I still can't figure out fine-aiming with an analog stick
-I would rather play a text-based game than N64

I wish I could disagree with you, but to be honest, I really only enjoyed the second Darkstalkers game, Nightwarriors. The rest of the series just never appealed to me, and I'm a hardcore fighting game nerd.
Nightwarriors is the one I really can't get into. It was one of my first Saturn games, and I heard it was supposed to be good, but I really can't get into it.

Castlevania IV imo is the best of the series... followed by SotN although in general I don't like the way Konami changed the series into what it currently is. Maybe the upcoming WiiWare game will return things to their roots...
The second though: utter lies. 2 will always be the best Mega Man (though 6 is a LOT better than people give it credit for).
Agreed. Mega Man 2 is amazing, especially if you compare it to the first game. Mega Man 3 was close, but the bosses in MM2 were perfect. I quit the series after number 5, though.

3 is also great, but the thing that pushes 2 over the edge is that there really is no set order of how to do the Robot Masters, and that makes the game a lot more fun for me. The fact that I don't have to start with, say Air Man, and then MUST go to Crash Man is a plus.
I don't blame you for quitting after 5 -- 6 is damn hard, probably the hardest after the first one. It is fun, though.

The only thing that really bothers me about Castlevania IV is the insane amount of slowdown. It's not the best or the worst in the series, somewhere in the middle.
-Castlevania Chronicles is one of my favorites in the series.
-Without Street Fighter IV, I probably would've sold my dust-collecting 360.
-Tired of any FPS/3rd PS after Quake III
-Bioshock sucked.
-Metal Gear VR Missions is the only good post-NES Metal Gear.
-I've never played a DS (other than in-store)
-I didn't care for Ico (loved Shadow)
-Mario64 is over-rated.

Really? I found 6 to be the easiest of the NES games. For the original series as a whole (aside from 9, since I haven't played it very much,) I would rank only 7 as easier.

I strongly agree with this one. But don't get me started. :p

I seriously cannot beat most of the Robot Masters; 6 is the only game of the original NES run where I have this problem.

I think that Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is incredibly overrated. I think everyone's love for it is actually the level of nostalgia they have for it.

I don't think you're in the minority there. OOT was the game that got me back into console gaming, but it hasn't aged well visually and later Zelda games make it sort of redundant. I'd play through it again if it were remade, released for DS, or if someone releases a really great upgrade hack for emulation.

All acclaimed and loved N64 games only seemed great because everything else on the system was so, so bad. All your cherished N64 games are above average at best.
Also there was only one great RPG on the PS2 and it was called Wizardry: Tale of the forsaken Land..

I have many confessions, and I now have the chance to get them off my chest. Here they are:
I also don't like Castlevania 4.
I have a SNES but not Link to the Past.
I can't stand Super Mario Land
I love Super Mario Bros 2
I hate Sonic as a character, though I love the games he is in (I always thought he was kind of a dick, at least in the newer games)
I like Luigi better than Mario
Resident Evil 4 is my favorite game of the RE series (and I am a die-hard fan of the entire series)
There are probably a ton more too, I am just not thinking of them now.

Uh huh, because everyone who loves a N64 game doesn't have access to hundreds, if not thousands, of other games on countless other systems that they would be able to compare them to. Especially around here, right?

Shocking revelation from me: Vagrant Saga is hard!
-Bioshock sucked.
Agreed with this point in particular. Our numbers grow!

oh snap
Thoughts on the CV franchise:
CV1, III, 4, Bloodlines, X68000 / Chronicles, Rondo = great, though 4 and Bloodlines rely a bit too much on omg grafix
Belmont's Revenge - very close to that same level
CV II - this would be great if not for the mansions and some other uninspired level stuff
Adventure - personal favorite, though clearly inferior in some regards. Kind of like Nemesis, also on the GB.
The N64 games are all about the atmosphere. Ditto Haunted Castle, actually. The N64 games are much gentler to play, however. LoD has a little bit of replay value on account of the extra modes, but mainly it's just fun to rush through them occasionally.
SotN and later - oh great let's grind. It may be pretty. This did not stop me from having fun with CotM, HoD, AoS. Out of those the rate of long-term play seems to be CotM, HoD, AoS from first to last. Haven't a clue about the DS titles. So I guess quality has been going straight into the tank since Iga got involved with the series, not that there's a direct correlation there. No idea about the post-N64 3D games. Also: Tiger Electronics Simon's Quest handheld, and Game.com SotN - wheeeNO. I would play them each at least once out of principle, though.

My Castlevania confession? The only CV I have ever beaten is CV II and I enjoyed it.
I liked Simon's Quest. There, I said it.

I hate how everything that AVGN says is taken as universal gospel (same deal with Seanbaby 10 years ago). Just a few years ago, this whole idea of "CV2 is terrible/everybody hates CV2" didn't even exist. It used to be widely regarded as a good, maybe not great, game. Now every 14-year-old kid wants to jump on the "CV2 sucks lol" bandwagon, when they've probably barely played it in the first place (or didn't until AFTER the AVGN set their minds on it).
By the way, Deadly Towers isn't the worst NES game either.

Deadly Towers is bad, but it's far from the worst NES game. The worst I've played will always be Jim Henson's Muppet Adventure: Chaos at the Carnival. The game was incredibly boring, glitchy as all hell, no fun, and, of course, led to the downfall of the Muppet franchise (alright, maybe not that one, but still, it's a rough game).

So which forumer are you responding to in here? :? People were well aware of SQ's flaws long before AVGN. Calling it outright terrible is a bit over the top, but it's by no means perfect. This is by no means a new discussion; there was some discussion of whether the game was good or bad "back in the day" on the CVD Forums.

I was responding to Sabz5150 comment of "I liked Simon's Quest. There, I said it.", which implies that it's some sort of shocking thing to actually like Simon's Quest. I'm not suggesting something as preposterous as claiming no one disliked CV2 prior to AVGN, but there is definitely a distinctly different atmosphere surrounding the game now.

I really enjoyed CV2 back when I just had the three NES games. They were all good. Now though, CV2 is like Metroidvania Alpha-Zero. It was the least enjoyable of the NES games IMO, but it suffered greatly in posterity. The only saving grace that is has is that it was once a great game. So many better have come along. 1 and 3 have proven to be more solid.

Racing game edition:
I think the Mario Kart series really blows. The weapons suck, and in particular the blue shell is just ridiculously cheap. Most of the tracks are pretty bland, and some of them are outright torturous. The A.I. literally cheats. They're simply not good games.
I think Gran Turismo is one of the most boring games ever made. And I never understood why people said it was "realistic". Unless those cars are meant to be coated with invisible rubber, the way you bounce off walls is decidedly not realistic.
I never understood what was supposed to be so good about Sega Rally, or any other rally racer for that matter. The steering is poopy. I know it's the way it is on purpose, and that it's a reasonably accurate representation of how it is to handle a car in those conditions, but I just don't think it's fun. I'd rather play a racing game that doesn't involve fighting with the steering.
Two of my favorite racing games are Rollcage and Out Run 2019.

Oh I guess I should probably put in a reply here. lol It's good to see I'm not alone in my dislike for CV4. Still not a bad game by any means, just far below childhood expectations and it has simply never grown on me. Bloodlines was much much more like what I envisioned a 16-bit Castlevania to be. ;)
On the note of other confessions:
I like Spelunker for the NES, I find the game to be graphically charming and each time I play it I have fun. I've seen Spelunker joked about/called crap plenty and even a few times (if I recall) I've read that the game is considered a joke in Japan (?). I don't even have some weird nostalgia for it either, I honestly had never played the game before 1998/1999 or so. I suppose it probably helped that one of my favorite NES games ever was/is The Goonies (1) and Spelunker does share a few similarities.
I'd like to get a NES style repro of Spelunker 2 made one of these days, even though I've never played it.
