I recall reading somewhere a long time ago that if you use a N64 Gameshark on your American system and put a Japanese game on top of it, you'll be able to play by skipping the cheats and going straight to the game. It makes sense to me, since the only thing keeping Japanese games from working is the different shape, and since the GS doesn't have those tabs, they'll fit just fine. However, I was thinking about importing something and I thought to myself "I should check again to make sure it'll work!" and I have been unable to find anything on it besides a few comments on YouTube videos, which I don't really trust.
I'd like to avoid cutting out the tabs inside the system, as it didn't work too well when I did that to my SNES and I don't have the correct screwdriver to take it apart to do it properly.

So if anyone can confirm the Gameshark thing, I'd be very grateful!

It works perfectly. It's also probably the ONLY gameshark that actually DOES work for this purpose (without modifications) since the SNES one actually has the tabs that are inside a US SNES. No idea why they did that.

[edit: Besides the disc based ones, of course.]

Alright, thank you for clarifying! :)

The Genesis one works for this.

Unfortunately a number of Genesis games have software lockouts requiring a special Game Genie code to bypass. Though, while I don't know the exact number of games that are subject to this nor what they all are, I don't think there are that many.

This is what I was thinking about when I left out the Genesis one. I will say that there are actually quite a number of MD titles that have region lockout, and several that don't have any Game Genie code to bypass that lockout. (You can always make your own code if you know how, but still.)

Is there any list that details all the games that have a lock out and what the codes are that work for them?

Here's a list of games w/ codes: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/genesis/file/916377/10774

And here's a list of games w/ the lockout chip: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/genesis/file/916377/13604 But that list is not complete.

Yes, I have played Super Mario 64 Rumble Version with no problem on a US N64 using a GameShark. I suppose it might work on a Japanese console, as I notice the tabs on the GameShark cart are wider.
(US carts have tabs on the edge of the cart, Japanese are indented a bit)
I suppose it wouldn't let you play PAL carts, though, since I hear the N64 has an NTSC/PAL lockout chip like the SNES.

Another quick (and probably kinda stupid) question: If the Japanese game requires an expansion pack, and the US system has one installed, it'll still work correctly with the game shark, right? I don't see why it wouldn't, but you never know, and I really don't want to spend money on something that won't work!
