Dunno if any of you guys have heard of xoc, but he's responsible for some very radd video game cover albums. Previously, he has done Super Mario World (http://www.archive.org/details/xoc_SMW) and Kirby's Adventure (http://www.xocmusic.com/kirby/), both using a huge assortment of mostly (all?) live instruments. Trust me, his stuff is magical. His newest effort is the entire Super Mario Bros 3 soundtrack. I heartily recommend all of his music, especially since most of it is free, but if you can cough up a small donation please check out the SMB3 album:

Thanks for the link! I've been listening to some of their stuff and I really like it. SMW main title theme on harmonica and accordian FTW!!!
I like the variety of NES music they've done. They not only did a complete album of themes from NES movie based games (including Beetlejuice, which has a pretty good soundtrack despite being a crappy game), but they did a cover of themes from Kid Niki and freakin' Dance Aerobics.
There are a lot of NES games out there with underrated music and I believe they're trying to show off some of the lesser known NES music. That's pretty cool in my opinion :)

Oh yeah! I forgot to mention the the movie/game album. More killer stuff!
You keep saying "they", but you know what the crazy part about this is? It's just one guy. :-o (well, except for SMB3 where he has a bassist working with him)
He's also covered some other great games for the Dwelling of Duels competition, like Goonies 2, Super Mario Land, and yeah Dance Aerobics. Haha!
