the writing seems too blury, and the sticker is not centered properly.

The sticker seems pixelated...there are DIP switches showing, but who says the guy didn't just modify a gold Zelda 2 cart?

Something just doesn't look right about it...

There's a hole, just to point that out, south and somewhat west of the sticker. The sticker being offcenter could be explained by the cart's rather one-off nature or perhaps the ravages of time. There's some scratches on the actual gold surface, which you wouldn't necessarily see if this cart had been freshly converted from a gold NES game. Common sense on that.

I've never counted up the ridges on the side (here the left) on a cart, NWC or otherwise, but to me (at least) this looks normal. Again, the switches, that hole, scratches, and also the bit of board poking through (that's not your average NES board if my opening of Tengen Tetris means anything--even if he found a fullsize board, would it look like that? Don't think so, but prove me wrong).

Looks just like mine, except mine has a centered label :D , anyway I compare a scan of mine to that pic and they look identical.

Interesting, and from the avatar I see what you mean. Say, what does "udisi" stand for, and does it have anything to do with your self-proclaimed game guruness?

That's the first time someone actually asked me what it meant. "udisi" was the name of my friends dog when I was little and I believe it meant "little sh*t" in some language. I've been using the name on the internet cause no one ever heard of it and I could always get the same screen name for any site.

@Videogamedaryll---If you want I'm pretty sure I have a scan without the writing on it, if you need one.

Not to get too off topic or anything, but was anyone AT the NWC? I was 12 years old when this competition went on, and my dad brought me. I competed and made it through the first round :D but just missed the 2nd round cut... oh, if I was only a little older.. ah well.

I'd love to own one of those cartridges. Do they pop up around the net often? Are there many of them floating around, or are they rare?

I don't know if it's real or not, just go by what these good people say; I say it's a beautiful thing, whether it's real or not. :D

Needle: They are VERY rare. Like, multi-thousands of dollars rare.

I too was at the first NWC, at the Philadelpha stop. (Valley Forge, actually.) I made it into the "semi-finals", which really just means past the first round. Promptly screwed up in the second round, though, up on that big stage. I wish I remember what my scores were.

Was Howard Phillips there? I'm thinking he was. Hrm.

BenT - I was at the stop in Hartford, CT. I still remember it very vividly, like it was yesterday. I was only 12 years old at the time - I signed up for the competition and before I knew it, I was thrust into the fray. In order to continue to round 2, you had to score at least 175,000 points (at least, that's what I was told). I finished SMB quickly, but then I hit a snag. I panicked, and couldn't remember how to go FORWARD in Rad Racer! It was probably a good 15 seconds of dead time before I coaxed the answer out of the kid next to me. My final score was about 183,000 - despite my snafu I still made it (and consequently the kid next to me did not :D )

The second round was on the big stage. I don't remember much about it, cuz I was basically freaking out. I know I didn't screw up Rad Racer again :) unfortunately, I was told the cut was 200,000, but my final score this time was only 190,000. I scored one tetris in the 1st round, and none on the stage. If only I had more practice. ho hum.

And I don't remember seeing Howard Phillips there.... I think that would have been something that definitely would have stuck out in my head. But, Hartford was a pretty small stop, in comparison to some others...

I have a picture of me and Howard I need to scan and post it someday. Nice guy, but not the great video game player Nintendo Power made him out to be.
