The search didnt work for me so....
I just picked up Raiden lll for the PS2 and on the disc it says DVD . But the game has a blue bottom like a CD game. Is this normal?

Wikipedia is your friend for useless and not always verifiable information:

It should be noted that the original packaging of Raiden III for the US PS2 Version says the disc enclosed is DVD-ROM. However, the game was published in a CD-ROM format with the blue disc bottom.

Hooray for eye-bleeding colours!!!

Yes its normal, my game is the same as you described. I wonder if the artwork was ever fixed for other printings... There are 3-5 other ps2 game that are messed up like that, even a few demos discs too. Btw the newest cd discs for the ps2 are clear now, like dvds, the blue bottom versions are gone. Games in the last year, that are cd, only apply to that.

Raiden III, considering its release price/publisher I'm pretty sure that it only got a single release, so all copies would have this error.

Thats interesting to know in regards to the CD based PS2 games getting released now. I'd probably not have known had you not said anything, due to buying and playing hardly any PS2 stuff anymore.

Good game and nice to see people are still picking up this challenging shooter.
I'm pretty sure this only ever saw one print run and as such all Raiden 3's will have this UFO Interactive DVD mis-label gaff.

I remember this controversy when the game was released (I pre-ordered it). Around Raiden III's release, SCEA stopped branding CD-ROM games. As a consequence, even if a game is released in CD format, the packaging still labels it as a DVD-ROM.

There are plenty of cd labeled games on the artwork and on the game disc, that came after Raiden lll. Where is your proof of that statement you make?

Also it was going to be released by XS Games, which happened to make odd artwork choices that seem out there. Like Castle Shikigami 2, and Mobile Light Force 2.
Mobile Light Force 2 is also messed up exactly like Raiden lll too.
So i think it has more to do with XS Games then anything.

I wish they fucked up more often with labeling. I love the games that had cover artwork that was considered racial or sexually explicit and had to be changed after the first thousand or so. Remember Super Mario Galaxy's 'U R Mr Gay'? :D

I sorta remember seeing that.^ Here is something i just found, and I'm not sure if anybody has ever mentioned it before. For the ps2 game siren, on the game case, is the word shit. :drinking: I guess somebody missed that, i checked my copy and its the same as the linky,

Garfield: Lasagna World Tour is also, another mess up, like Mobile Light Force 2, and Raiden lll.

Does anyone know if Pinball Hall of Fame - The Williams Collection, is a dvd or cd game? That falls in between some data i have, it could be either format.

Here is the data i collected from my games.
Here is the known list for the new style cd's: (9 total so far)

The Adventures of Darwin SLUS-21592 PTRM-007845 6/25/07

Wow, not a single cd game for 2009 yet, that i know of. I guess the cut off date is anywhere between march and june of 2008, as to which style it was made with. I was glad all the release dates happened to not conflict with each other. I seem to recall Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure getting delayed, perhaps that is why it so high for a ptrm number.

Was there any real reason for PS2 CDs to be blue bottomed? Other than looking hideous, and causing issues on older PS2s, of course.

See the title of the game, near the bottom of the first picture,
SIREN Well the letters are spread out, like this S I R E N, they have little blue symbols between each letter.
To me, since i have no idea if those are real japan letters, or even mean anything, those blue symbols look like a H and a T, between the S, I and before the R.

Lol those symbols are katakana for 'Siren'.
