View Full Version : Need help: trying to learn how to drift

I've never been able to drift in a racing game. I'm currently playing Dirt and I find that I can't win on certain tracks because I'm unable to drift.

Whenever I try I always slow down to almost a stop facing right into the wall. What am I doing wrong? Are there any racing games out there that guide you on how to do drifts?

Any tips would be great!
Thanks

The easiest way it to Powerslide.

This is easily done when you are cornering at high speed and press the handbreak button ..

The car will slide and you just have to calculate the time to release the handbreak to keep going.

Much more advanced techniques are achieved using the break/gas pedal simultaneously combined with up and down shifting depending on the corner; the key is to use torque to force the car to slide and counter the movement steering on the opposite side.

So what is the best time to release the hand break?

I hold it for too long because I end up stopping or I don't hold it long enough and I don't slide.

Try the Initial D racing games - or any Rally racers.

Like I said I'm playing Dirt which is a Rally racer but there isn't any kind of a how to mode

Try Burnout 2 or Mario Kart 64 (or DS). It's not as "realistic" as some other games but you'll have a lot more fun while doing so.

Or if you want to learn how to really drift, look up Keiichi Tsuchiya's Drift Bible (the actual person that Initial D was loosely based on).

Ok, I'll be honest with you: I have no idea how to drift in Dirt, but the title of the thread was so vague I thought it was a great opportunity to just share my appreciation towards the aforementioned games and driver. Maybe some online faqs/guides could be more helpful? :)

usually you can just hit the brake button for a split second, then turn the wheel to the left or right and hit the gas and go into a drift.

whether the game is good or not, fast and furious on ps2 actually has some awesome tutorials about a bunch of techniques to do it

It's an Equilibrium thing, just drink a couple (dozen) beers and you'll be just fine! :D

Hey hey. The faster you drive, the faster you get home

I guess I should say that I can't do it in realistic games.
I have no problem doing it in Mario Kart or burnout games. But the burnout games let you know when you're doing it right

You should be able to apply similar techniques with realistic driving games to get it to work.

When I race in non realistic games I never, or at least very rarely, take my finger off the gas though. With Mario kart you press one button and your drifting and you never need to press the brake. With burnout you're not supposed to let go of the gas.

Well, generally speaking, you'll have to let go of the gas to start drifting with more realistic physics.

I turn into a corner, let off the gas, tap the brakes, get the rear end to slide around some, hit the gas again, and tap the steering to the outside of the turn to maintain a slide. It definitely takes some practice.

I suggest running time trials and practicing. Oddly, I had no trouble picking it up in rally-type games.

Sega Rally or there was a surprisingly excellent rally game from Codemasters late in the PS2 lifecycle.

You can't do it in a Barbie car.
