Top Shop Boardgame
Am I the only one remembers this one?
I picked it up in highschool many MANY moons ago at a Zellers for $4.99(actually i bought dupes for friends) and it became the game that doesn't stop.
My brother in law in fact just picked up a copy himself.
I'm unsure on how obscure this one is, but if anyone else has played it has it had the same effect on you? emerging at gatherings, leaving the room and comign back to see a game already in play? people picking it up just because they've played a single game?
For those who haven't played, it's like monopoly. in a mall. and yes, it does take hours and hours to end a game, or someone hitting reset in rage.

I really liked this game. There is a thread on DP about good obscure PSOne titles, and I mentioned this one. I find these budget titles interesting and wonder if there is a website devoted to them?

Yes. I got my copy for $4.99 also (at GameCrazy). It happens to be one of my favorite PS1 games. I can just never find enough people to play with. I would also like to suggest any of the other non-sports Agetec/A1/Tommo budget titles such as Shooter: Starfighter Sanvein, Tall Infinity, and Battle Hunter.

Oh yes - love the game! Easy to overlook because it was one of those late release A1 budget titles (most of which suck), but such a simple and solid game.

Years ago (I'm talking 2002-2004), an acqaintance of mine ran a website devoted to budget games. His first review was of Top Shop, and he said that it was his reason for creating the site, because he liked it so much. I picked it up based on his glowing recommendation, and I must say, it did not disappoint. This game is ridiculously addictive. Like with my friend, it kind of opened me up to budget games.

Wow, thanks for the rec. Never heard of this one, but it really looks cool. I'll have to find a copy now. :)

Me and my sister used to play this game ALOT. We would see how much we could screw each other over.. in a good way.

I loved this game. My brother and I would play it for hours, mostly one of us playing and the other going "You dumbass!" My brother had picked it up with another game with the same publisher, to which it was found out that they were both part of a Japanese series of games known as SimpleLite Series. If you like games like this, then the Japanese Itadaki Street games are fairly similar and just as addicting.

I bought it at an EB a few years ago for 3 or 4 bucks. The guy who rung me up told me about how him and his girlfriend played it on a regular basis. One of the better budget titles on the PS1.
I would also like to suggest any of the other non-sports Agetec/A1/Tommo budget titles such as Shooter: Starfighter Sanvein, Tall Infinity, and Battle Hunter.
Another title worth a look is Shooter: Space Shot. Unlike Starfighter Sanvein, it's more of a traditional shmup. It also has some interesting engrish:
"Bah, I still rather be surfing."
"Bad vibes, icky!"
And my personal favorite, which is currently in my sig:
"Whoa, this is a lot of sand around here is!"

It's funny, when you said Top Shop takes place in mall, I immediately thought of a commercial I saw once. It was for a board game called Mall Madness. The whole objective of the game is to shop 'til you drop!
Anyway, getting back on topic, the game sounds like loads of fun. I'm going to have to keep an eye out for it now!

I stumbled across this game at CCAG tonight. I remembered this thread and picked it up just from the recommendations here. Haven't played it yet, so I hope you folks haven't steered me wrong!

I got this game at Meijer's for like $5 way back when. I played it for awhile and found it addictive in that "Monopoly" way, but I could never get anyone else to play it.
I'm pretty sure that cat-dude screwed me over a few times. LOL
I might have to bring the PSX out of closet retirement and play some of the games again.

or the game crashing after an hour or two of gameplay
but i still love it, i have a soft spot in my heart for cheap budget games with an ounce of playability
