Chirantan Patnaik, a resident of Mumbai, India, became an official Guinness Record holder last month when he clocked over 40 continuous hours playing Rockstar's 2008 smash Grand Theft Auto IV, reports GameCulture. Patnaik trained for the marathon event by running, exercising, and yoga -- which no doubt prepared him well for Grand Theft Auto's themes of running, shooting, and stealing cars.

The previous record was held by a U.S. citizen and stood at a mere 28 hours and one minute. Patnaik, who has a day job as an equities trader, isn't done, either: he plans to challenge his own record in an attempt to make it to 48 hours.

Could the Xbox 360 actually survive that long?

That's a record?

That's the question we should all be asking.

Seems like it is getting pretty easy to get into the Guinness Book of Records lately. 40 hours straight of one game doesn't sound too difficult.

I am not going to try, but still. Get some of the Blue Collar Tweekers we have over here in Minnesota, set them down with a 360 and a bag of their favorite meth and I think we would have that record broke in no time.

Just a thought!

Sounds like an average weekend back in the 80's for me and my friends.

I think that the person left his system on for 40 hours and just told them that he played it that long. You really dont have to be playing for it to keep track of your time.

Who here wants to play a multiplayer game and sit on there for 50 hours straight?

"Group of people play game for 50 hours straight. Breaks record."

Darth Sensei tried this a while ago with Vice City on PS2 and his system overheated and froze up around the 12 hour mark. Happened twice.

No way someone played on a 360 that long without it red ringing. I call shenanigans.

Look what I found. Damn. You can make it into Guinness book of World Records for anything. Stupid shit if you ask me.

Longest Tekken 6 Win Streak makes it to Guinness Records.

A new game releases, and the Guinness Book of World Records is there, awarding the world record for longest winning streak on Tekken 6 to Mr. Eliot Smith-Walters, A.K.A. Shadow Force.

Shadow Force won 68 consecutive best-of-three matches at the London MCM Expo over the weekend, losing only 9 rounds and racking up 25 perfects during the course of his streak, making me wonder if perhaps they had recruited London housewives to act as his opponents. Either way, official Guinness World Records representatives were on hand to witness the event, which will be entered into next year's Guinness Book of World Records Gamer's Edition.

Eliot used Lars for most of his battles, swapping in Miguel, Lee, and Dragunov when circumstances called for them.

According to Guinness editor Gaz Deaves, Eliot's surprised everyone, stealing the record out from under Super vs. Battle 2009 champion Phil "Dinosaur" Mackenzie.

"It was certainly a dramatic few hours. With Dinosaur's epic win at the Super vs. Battle this year we were expecting him to walk away with the record, so when Eliot KO'd him in the third round we almost couldn't believe what we were seeing. Overall the standard of play was very high, with Eliot clearly the strongest on the day."

Can you beat 68 consecutive wins in a row? More importantly, do you hang around with Guinness World Records officials?

I remember the online portion of Guinness had a "most individuals killed in a terrorist act" award.

Sept. 11th was it. and then they had the little link "break this record"

They've since taken it down though.

I am not going to lie, I have no clue how these people are getting their records in so fast.

If they pay for that express shit, which I didn't, than maybe.

I made a post in arcade alley also posting videos of my record run in Steep Slope Sliders, and I submitted that back in April of this year.

I went through the entire process, and I actually checked a day or 2 ago about the status, and it says that they got my record and it is still under review.

Really, the only way I can think of is if these dudes had a guinness guy over to their house, which would mean they do this shit in the UK (which is where their office is located).

For the people thinking of trying for any record, like I said, mine is still under review and I submitted it in April of this year. Here is the process and stuff you have to provide for this (and also time frame I have been waiting so you are aware):

Submittal paperwork that you want to complete this record.
Wait for approval on the record where they will also tell you the current record if it exists.
Wait Time: 1 month

Submit paperwork saying you are going to complete this record.
Wait for approval for the paperwork saying that you are going to do this record.
Wait Time: 1 month

Fill out the paperwork for your evidence submission.
Also include your evidence which includes a dvd of you doing the record. 2 professionals in the industry witnessing the record. 4-6 bystanders watching the record. pictures of the record including the venue, system it was done on, and as many other photos that you can provide
Wait Time: I have been waiting about 5 months

Like I said, how these people are able to submit these records and get them in and accepted so quickly is beyond me, as I am currently in the final stage of this myself, and have been waiting for a very long time. Once they accept my record, well, I made the record and I will get a certificate from them for this record.

Wouldnt that also be a record... You know, for Microsoft console longevity?

just how pathetic is it when 40 hours is a record in gaming on any system or game? christ, I know a couple of us play like we were korean starcraft fanatics. hell, when diablo first came out i'd play that damn game as much as i could. one week, i played for like 3 days in a row only taking breaks for food and bathroom needs. i only stoped when i fell asleep and hit my head on the corner of the desk. guess the system lasting 40 hours without RRoDing is record enough.

Considering that Guiness is in increasingly dire financial straits, perhaps the appearance of such things is not too surprising.
