Ok, I am soon going to start collecting Lucasfilm/arts adventure games + a few more. I am now investigating what was released for what and I suddenly remember that Maniac Mansion was released in different languages. In Swedish as well actually.

I read somewhere that it "should" be available in English, German, French, Swedish, Japanese (I actually have MM for Famicom) and......now, can anyone help me with that issue?

What languages exists? Any site or additional info would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Are you talking ONLY about the console version of Maniac Mansion and which versions came out for the NES, or are you also interested in C64/128, DOS, or other versions that might have come out as well? It's interesting to note that Maniac Mansion was first and foremost a PC game and that Nintendo heavily censored the Maniac Mansion game and changed quite a few things to make it more "acceptable."

You can find information on the censorship on http://members.fortunecity.com/harang/

along with a message board and other stuff. The guy who runs that site might be able to help you. It's funny, but LucasArts doesn't even list MM on their web site as being one of their games - even when you hit "classics."

EDIT: you know, I think I remember my PC version asking me whether I wanted to install all those other languages when I installed it. Haven't played the game in years and the disks are at my parents'...I'd have to check up on that...but a lot of those languages might be on the one PC version.

IIRC, the NES version might have had two different releases. I'm not sure, but I remember hearing that they took out the hamster trick in the later versions, but I know it was in mine. The mansion's layout itself was vastly different between NES & PC.

They did take it out in later version, my copy had the hamster trick.

Anyone got examples on the different mansion layouts?

The site I linked to above (with the interview with the NES-version-guy) has a bunch of different things regarding some of the furniture and artwork in the game. There was a nude statue in one of the rooms, as well as some pin-up posters, and the dialogue was changed quite a bit, too. Like I said that site pretty much has most of the changes listed in the interview (I think it's called "The Expurgation of Maniac Mansion").

Other than that the mansion is pretty much the same except for the graphics. I can't notice anything drastically different. Most of the rooms are in the same place - they just look crappier on the NES version. They even have the huge security door in the NES version that was used in the PC versions for copy protection.

The hampster trick was rumored to be removed from the later versions of the game, though that was just a rumor. In America, all copies of the game have the hampster trick. Not sure if the "removed" version hit shelves in Europe, or if they got the regular version too.

Maniac Mansion was also released in Spanish for the NES.
