We know the new PS3 Slim will play PS1 games but NOT PS2 games. That sort of aggravates me for a couple reasons. Recently rumors began swirling that Sony intends to sell all PlayStation 2 titles through the PlayStation Network. There was also discussion on bringing Dreamcast games to the PlayStation Network. Hopefully these rumors end up being true of course. But if you don't have a PS2 or it doesn't work anymore you can't play the games you HAVE on the PS3. Will people actually buy games they already own AGAIN? I mean, I'm going to guess the PS2 games would be around $15-$20 on PSN.
Now for me, if it were still backward compatible, I would still buy a PS2 game that I always wanted, but never played before. I wouldn't doubt a lot of people would do the same. So is it really THAT necessary to strip the console of its backward capabilities and make people buy the game again because their console won't play the disc version? I discussed this too on my blog today (removed)…

How would Sony do that thou,I mean Dreamcast games are 650 MB to 1.2GB and PS2 Games are 2GB to 8GB,i mean, thats alot of storage space they would have to have, maybe they compress it somehow? I still like the idea of having physical media CD's and DVD's not digital media files and virtual games. Dont get me wrong, its a good idea,I just dont see how they would do it with the size of the games.

... This looks like a thinly veiled spam post.
Edit: Yep, this same post was made on two other boards so far. (http://www.google.com.mx/search?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=edG&num=20&q=%22We+know+the+new+PS3+Slim+will+play+PS1+games+ but+NOT+PS2+games.%22&btnG=Search&aq=f&oq=)

Guess he's not really a Sony fan and finally found out about the PS2/Dreamcast emulation that someone from Sega rumored. Then decided he wanted to go around bashing the PS3 about it. It's been over a month since this information has been released.
The Dreamcast thing is an awesome idea and would most likely get more people picking up a PS3 because of it.
An idea that I made up on another thread is a rerelease of Phantasy Star Online with all the servers back. Hell. Off topic, but if they ported Phantasy Star Online to the PSP with local wifi/ad-hoc only, I'd use the PS3 to play it with people using ad-hoc party. Phantasy Star Online is an amazing game and I think the best on the Dreamcast.
Notes from Sega’s quarterly meeting with SCEA also brought up the possibility of Dreamcast games coming to PlayStation Network and perhaps other consoles.
The minutes state “if we [Sega] provide a list of DC titles SCEA will let us know which ones they’re interested in having exclusively.” The exclusivity bit may mean Dreamcast titles could come to other digital platforms like Xbox Live.
Another bullet point titled “PS2 emulator for PS3 (confidential)” describes SCEA’s plan to sell all PS2 titles over PSN. This sounds similar to their PlayStation Classics plan where PsOne games are sold digitally even though the PS3 can play PS1 discs.
Since PS2 games are readily available, I’m not too crazy about the idea of downloadable PS2 games unless we get access to imports via the rumored import store. But, there are a ton of excellent Dreamcast games that like Power Stone, Segagaga, and Shenmue 1 / 2 that I would like to see. Interestingly, Sega re-registered trademarks for a slew of Dreamcast games in North America including Jet Grind Radio, Cosmic Smash, and Chu Chu Rocket.

what they should do is keep track of all the titles you downloaded before. Then if you delete the game from your hard drive you can download it free again anytime you want to play it again. I think the Wii does that because it already has like no hard drive, just smaller flash memory.

They already do this. Everything. Demos and games.

Its not like they couldnt employ some sort of quick compression and uncompression scheme to store and play large file size games...

Wouldn't on-the-fly compression kinda cause emulation speed to take a hit? Or cause problems with games that require exact timing?

I am going "naughty" for this conversation, but it is true facts. Echelon figured out compression on DC games on, I believe, Skies of Arcadia. I am pretty sure it was SoA.
They did what you are talking about, and it actually worked out pretty well, from what others tell me.
But the point being that if some pirates could figure it out, then why can't people that actually have rights to the code figure it out?

Probably. It was just a thought though.
It would be pretty costly on the HDD's free space to store PlayStation 2 games. Just 5 regular non-dual-layer games would take up 23.5 gigabytes. Thats a good percentage of even the biggest HDD PS3 sku out there
