Toki was a platforming shooter developed by TAD Corporation that released in arcades in 1989. As an ape, players traverse the terrain shooting projectiles from the simian's mouth.

While the game is somewhat obscure compared to other arcade classics, Toki was popular enough back then to warrant ports to home consoles.

Newly-founded French developer Golgoth and its small team didn't forget about about Toki, and 20 years after the release of the original, plan on launching a completely updated, high-definition version of the 2D platformer on Xbox Live Arcade.

Golgoth Studios' Anthony De Sa Ferreira tells Gamasutra about the adventures of developing within a small team, tracking down obscure Data East titles, and the worry that comes with waiting for Toki to emerge from the Microsoft XBLA approval process.Read Whole Article Here (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=25772)

Saw this last week on Shmups, I think it's pretty garbage looking. The comparisons on their site of the original screenshot next to the tone-deaf hackjob they cooked up don't inspire confidence or seem to agree with their argument that it's "not a straight remake" - everything looks exactly the same, but uglier (that's not 100% correct actually, some things look fine but don't mesh with what's next to them). It's good to find out that they actually did get the rights, though.

Some of the backgrounds look nice, but contrast is all over the place and the character sprite in particular is plain bad and the quality not consistent (the worst is how they've changed the crouching sprite, seen in one of the shots on their site).

On the whole, not terribly excited about this one.

Wow that looks very uninteresting, which doesn't surprise me since Toki was a meh game anyway.

Yeah, it's a weird choice of game to "remake". Why not Bad Dudes? ha!

wow. why?

I didn't even know TAD was still around. They probably got the license for cheap.

I concur and I for one would love to experience "The President has been kidnapped by Ninjas!" in full HD glory! Of course they'd have to change George Bush Sr., to Obama to fit with the times, but that would only make it twice as awesome.

Obama's not above going out for a burger (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/sleuth/2009/05/_fallout_over_president_obamas.html). HA! HA!

Bush's food outing would probably lead to the Bad Dudes rescuing him a second time. LOL
