eldavojohn writes "Game Politics makes note of criticism over leaked footage from the upcoming Modern Warfare 2 release. (Spoiler warning.) Footage shows the player engaged in killing civilians with terrorists (relevant video begins at about 1:50, second source in case of DMCA). Several game sites are asking if this is taking things too far. Probably just advertising at work, but the footage is indeed controversial — the question remains whether or not it is out of context."http://games.slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rss&op=image&style=h0&sid=09/10/28/1634218 (http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/10/28/1634218/Leaked-emModern-Warfare-2em-Footage-Causes-Outrage?from=rss)

And this sounds like yet ANOTHER french leaked game (from the in-game audio).
A big step above the previous intro for CoD4, where you don't do the shootin, but get shot (that was pretty powerful, not to mention one of the two characters you play as [the marine] dying after the bomb drops in the middle of the game). IW does a great job telling stories and they've taken to pushing it to new levels w/o question.
I'll reserve full judgement for until I'm actually playing the game, can understand whats being said, and knowing why i'm doing whats going on.
It'll be interesting to see if there's any mainstream backlash from this.

On the one hand, this isn't anything different from what you'd possibly see in an action flick. Terrorists gunning down innocents.
On the other, allowing a player to actually do this, as opposed to showing a cutscene or a video... Erk. Shit will fly.

I'm outraged that there is outrage. People need to get thicker skin.

Upon watching the video, I think a "fuuuuck" is appropriate.
Edit: Also, the video on the game's site shows Cyrillic lettering and Russian tricolor flags in the airport scene. No SWAT van has an OGU or whatever's on the side either (which is visible even in the really low-rez webcam video about the whole thing). They aren't trying to hide the scene, but they also aren't showing the whole thing. The voiceover on MW2's site mentions Cain and Abel, too.

In CoD4, you spend much time in Russia, as well as dealing with some break-away baddies of Russian origins. CoD:MW2 continues on with the story as it ends in CoD4:MW. So if anything you're playing (or pretending to be and actually are a double agent) as one of these terrorists out to overthrow the government. Everything happening at an airport in one of these Russian regions would fit perfectly in line with the games currently known story.

Anyone had a link to the video? The one on the site seems to be down for the moment.

I wonder what the artist was thinking when he made the controversial sequence. Those that think light of it are ignoring(or not admitting) that the artist was obviously trying to get a reaction out of the player and strike a nerve. It's no big deal , its not going to cause media backlash! And this wont be a step backwards for video games as a art! I love bill orielly will probably enjoy this shit especially since the game comes with night vision goggles heh.

It used to be up at Shacknews, but yeah, it's dead too. I'm surprised it was taken off LiveLeak, I thought they NEVER took down videos...

People are completely missing the (IMO) more interesting point.
Instead of "pushing the envelope", I think Infinity Ward actually took the cowardly PC way out. Russian terrorists? Really? You just can't turn on a TV lately without hearing about all those evil Russian terrorist suicide bombers and soulless Russian religion fanatics.
WE MUST STOP THE RUSSIANS!!!11

What about all those hunting games? What did the ducks in Duck Hunt ever do to you or anybody else? Were they terrorist ducks? The only animal that bothers you is the dog and you can't shoot that, just the innocent ducks.

So...... noone thinks the mass media wont make a big deal over it? Ok.......... >_>
Well, the story out of the Associated Press (which some mainstream outlets will likely run) was pretty balanced, and Activision did the right thing by coming out and explaining the context of the scene. One thing is for sure, there are a lot of interesting details which will probably never come out, which is often the case in the big bad game industry!
Once graphics become "hyper real" it'll be interesting to see how devs depict violence and other taboo subjects in there games. Right now even the most detailed character models and environments don't look completely realistic. But once they do, who knows if it'll kick up the videogame violence debate once more.
