I always thought that super mario 2/3 would just be way to long to sit down and beat in one sitting without using the warp tunnels. Any other games that you would have to beat in one sitting because you could not save or use a password for.

Kid Chameleon is always the first game that comes to mind. It takes me (actually, us - me, my ex and her brother) more than five hours to complete, on a good day.

Blaster Master is always the answer to this question. Other games without passwords or save features are speed runs by comparison.

Yup, I was going to mention Blaster Master myself.

The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy for NES. This game is over 2 hours long if you know where all the items are and how to use them.

I beat it without dying last time I played which is quite an achievement. But it took me years of playing to be able to do that. I videotaped my last play so it is definately going up on youtube sometime soon.

If you play the Aladdin Deck Enhancer, Sega Genesis or Game Gear versions, Dizzy moves faster and items aren't scattered as far from their destinations.
So I'd only say the NES version is that long.

Blaster Master

I seem to remember it taking 8 hours to beat, but I may have been a little slow back then.

Oh just remembered - Dragonstomper for Atari 2600. It's a cassette tape game and you have to fight a lot to get powerful enough, but there is no save feature as it's Atari.

I remember Rygar taking me forever and a day.

Don't they use passwords?

How about for old handheld systems? I always have the batteries die on me when playing Sonic 2 for Game Gear for instance. Gameplay should not be longer than average battery life.LOL

Did Castlevania have passwords or anything like that?

(have not played it more than a few times)

First one, no. It had continues though, don't recall if they were unlimited though.

i'm going to have to go with a couple of my favorates here, section Z and super pitfall very long games (espeicaly with super pitfall's second and third quests). swords and serpents with its impossibly long passwords (which are prone for errors) falls into the "beat in one sitting" camp

The original Castlevania had a save feature in the Japanese disk version (not the rare cart version, though that one added an Easy Mode).
I heard something suggesting was reinstated on the GBA, but I'm not sure myself.

the us gba one saves, but the japanese version has the original save menu that the disk system used (the us one just has one save file)

Blaster Master and Ghosts and Goblins, of course. The first Mega Man, while not incredibly long, is one that has to be done in one sitting. I remember having issues with Star Fox 64; again, not the longest, but still lengthy.

Mega Man was a long one for me, just because I wasn't any good at it. I probably spent at least a whole hour just trying to get through Guts Man's stage and past those damned platforms near the start.

I just thought that game went on forever, I tried to beat it but after so many hours I just gave up. Blaster master I could never make it past level four(sometimes I couldnt even make it to level four) without running out of continues.

I knew Kid Chameleon was going to get posted pretty fast. The sad part is it is a great game (although a Mario clone) but without a save feature or even a password I never met someone who beat it from start to finish.

Would you believe that I only mastered Guts Man's platforms about two years ago?

A friend and I beat it a loooooooooong time ago. It took about an entire night, but I remember it being a fun night.

And this is why I love "level select" codes so much. To me, the inclusion of such a code really helps increase a game's longevity. Sometimes it's fun to pop in a game and fool around on certain levels for 15, 30, 45 minutes. Especially after you've beaten it legitimately.

Rygar was the first one that came to my mind.

And the other (for which I'm thankful for emulation) - Rampage. There's over 120 levels of destroying cities. It can easily take 4 hours from scratch.

Claymates needed a damn save system, that game was long as hell and just when you thought it was over, it gets even longer.

Fester's Quest could have used a password system as well.

Don't they use passwords?

You get a password for Gauntlet, but from what I remember, you get it after a ridiculously long amount of time playing.

TMNT for Nes. Not super long but long enough, especially considering the extrem difficulty of some of the levels. Although it's still one of my favorite Nes games, it could have benefited greatly from a save system.

Count me among those who have beaten Kid Chameleon. Didn't even lose any continues until the final stage where I lost 4 or 5. (I did play it lots before that though)

Hey guys, what about the Adventure Island games? Those seem kind of long to me, if only because I suck at them.

Another vote for Blaster Master and SMB3 without warping.

Also Micro Machines for NES took forever. You had to win something like 24 races in a row, plus bonus levels. And the @#%! computer cheated like crazy and their cars drove twice as fast as yours towards the end.

Holy crap...I totally forgot about Claymates. That game took FOREVER AND A DAY and really needed some sort of save or password.

I don't think it did but it's been a long time since I played it.
