Yeah, they were released in PAL countries and instead of making an NTSC insert they just slapped some US UPC stickers on them as the Master System was basically dead in the US by that time. Sega of America was busy pushing the Genesis when these came out so the Master System was at the bottom of their list of priorities.

The UPC sticker is the only difference between these and the PAL versions (no regional lockout on the sms).

I've seen pictures of the Sonic UPC before but I can't remember where.

how hard is it to get the others with UPC stickers? I just bought Golden Axe Warrior online, and then leared about the sticker.I hope it comes with it. He claimed it was NTSC.

Not relatively hard.

I got Golden Axe Warrior fairly quickly from a collector at Atari Age. Decent price, too ($25).

Spiderman was a bitch to get. If it wasn't for my friend Scrimble, I don't think I would have had a chance. Mine came out to $37. Grolt once sold one for $75 on Ebay to a very desperare SMS collector. LOL

I already had Strider, but the box was messed up. Also, it was misplaced somewhere. I know I had it with the sticker, but last time I saw it the box was pretty much busted (though the sticker was still intact). Got the box for the game, with sticker, for $3. :)

Sonic is the elusive SOB. Always paid an exagerated amount, as already stated previously. Thank goodness I lost it, as I think I would have gone into a state of panic if I did win it. I remember seeing them at KBToys for around $10 back then, so I know some copies do exist here in PR. Maybe one day I will stike gold...

If you're going for the set, I'd just get the other 3 with the sticker and get a PAL sonic one. You may have to be patient for a UPC spider-man to show up on ebay though as it seems to take ages for another one to come up.

what would be a for price for a UPC spider man in good shape as well as the Strider?

I have somebody that wants to sell. I want to be fair, but not taken advantage of.

Is there a point to that sticker anyway? You know it's an overseas cart, why the sticker?

Is neither NTSC or PAL since it works in both way, therefore those who search a "NTSC only because i need a full NTSC set" its useless...those cart are "universal"

Since other than the sticker the releases are the same, the UPC code is what designates what was released in the US compared to what was released everywhere else in the western world. If you're all about playing, it doesn't matter, but if you want to collect you need to hunt those suckers down.

Sonic still eludes me, as it does virtually all of us. One day.

Of note, the Spider-man UPC is the only one that's not just a barcode, it's got a bunch of copyright text beside it as well.

but again, how much should a strider and a Spider-Man go for??

I've seen them go for $30-$75 in the past depending on how well listed they are.

Your best bet is to look for them hiding in bigger lots.

But the games themselves are European versions, an added sticker shouldn't matter. It's like wanting a game because there's a K-Mart price sticker on it instead of one from Toys R Us, it's the same game and packaging so it shouldn't really matter where it was sold.

It's like the Virtual Boy, at one point Japanese games were available for sale at EB Games. Do they count as a North American release because they were available for sale in a major retail store locally? I really don't think so, they're still Japanese releases even though they were available for sale locally.

I can't remember what game it was, but I'm pretty sure there's another that had a UPC sticker. I got a SMS game lot off craigslist and I remember one of them having an added UPC sticker on the back, but I sold off the games and I can't remember which one had the sticker on the back. None of the games I had were ones already listed in this thread for having stickers. I could list all the games I had so other people could check their copy if needed, I had about 12 games though.

Some Canadian releases have UPC stickers too... that's probably what you had.

Strider you can get fairly cheaply for around $20 at times.

Spiderman is the SOB...around $50 or more.

His question:
What NTSC Master System games have UPC sticers on them?

So basically there are none, as they are PAL (or, as previously said 'universal').

Thanks guys. I just want to get the NTSC set, with a PAL sonic. THese prices will help me when giving an offer to a guy that has them with the sticker.

There were several more PAL games unofficially brought over and released in North America after SEGA themselves stopped bringing them over, but like the Virtual Boy analogy, that's not the same. The four games we've listed were actively sold by SEGA of America - for sale directly through them via phone or their SEGA Visions magazine. Sonic was the last game officially advertised for sale in the magazine for the Master System. Games like World Games, Scrambling Spirits and Dynamite Dux definitely made their way over here, but they were never advertised as for sale in any SEGA of America documentation.

That's why the four releases hold weight as legitimate NTSC releases, and why the barcodes matter. They weren't a matter of big chains bringing them in, they were a company-wide initiative promoted exactly as if they were complete American releases. Hell, there is more advertising for Sonic on the SMS in SEGA Visions than any other Master System game in the whole magazine's run.

Yet you would think they would have printed more copies of the game, with the amount of promotion it had.

I still say somewhere out there, in a closed warehouse, thousands of US Sonic's still lie to be found. Or at least a ex-KBToys warehouse in PR chock full of them.

SEARS warehouses might be a good place to start :-)
