Unless you are dead set on obtaining US hardware and playing US hucards, you'd be better off buying a Japanese Duo-R and just buying Japanese titles. Alot of normal Duo models, both US and Japan release, have cap problems anyway. Its a crap shoot with them. Best to avoid. Most of the US titles were released for Pc-Engine too.

I am just getting into the TG-16/ PCE scene. I went with a region modded PCE white, also AV modded. I figue i will pick up the interface unit in the future if I am still interested in the system.

Thats just me though.

Ditto.

Go with a Duo-R or a Duo-RX, either will do fine. You'd be shooting yourself in the foot sticking solely with the US hardware because there are so many great Japanese HuCards, tons of which are completely English-friendly.

The converters can be pretty expensive, as in the US Turbo Duo, so really, your best bet would be the Japanese Duo-R/RX and getting a stand-alone TurboGrafx-16 for US cards.

The above statements are all true, the big thing for me was when I realized that getting a CD add-on as well as a converter was going to be about the same price as importing a Duo-R, not to mention a lot less reliable and a lot less sexy. I bought a Duo-R about 6 months ago, and it's been excellent, I highly recommend it.

However, if you were to find a TG-16 on the cheap with some cheap games, I'd still pick it up for collecting purposes.

I would really recommend getting a TG-16 along w/a Duo-R so you can play the handful of sweet US releases in English (and not have to worry about replacing caps or anything like that, plus have access to the handful of sweet PC Engine hu-card games that never got released here). For me, that means Neutopia I & II, Order of the Griffon and a couple other titles on the US side, and a bunch of RPGs as well as Alice in Wonderdreams and a few other titles on the Japanese side. Your best bet to decide how you feel is to just look on gamefaqs at the Turbo Grafx listing and see which games sound like they'd be of interest to you, then figure out whether they'd be too language-intensive for playing in Japanese.

I second (third? fourth??) the suggestion to get a Duo-R or Duo-RX. More reliable, and cheaper in the long run. If you don't like having a second system around just for North American HuCards, then you might want to look into getting the Duo region modded. If you're handy with a soldering iron and have the right parts, it's relatively straight forward. If the whole thing frightens you, then you might want to look around for a Duo that's already been modded, as they show up from time to time.

Actual converters are ridiculously expensive these days. It's now far cheaper to mail your system off to someone and have them mod it.

I spotted one with a switch mod for $50 bucks, I think after reading this might be worth the plunge
