I saw recently an Ebay auction that went for quite a bit for a European Mega Man Wily Wars Mega Drive cartridge. Am I too the understanding if I bought a European title that I can get it to work on my Sega Genesis via a Game Genie? ?? I would love to add that title to my collection and I read somewhere that a game genie or pro action replay would make these games work.? what do you guys think? I have a Genesis model 2

Sadly, no. I actually have the European version of Mega Man:The Wily Wars and it won't boot up with just a Game Genie. You need a converter cart like the Mega Key to get it to work...

No, I'm pretty sure you can get it to work with a Game Genie, you just need the proper code.

I couldn't find any code for the European version so I'm not sure if that would work with a Game Genie. The Japanese version has codes out there so it can be used with a Game Genie. A Mega Key is a brand of converter cartridge that allows you to play imports.

You could try to get a launch Model 1 Genesis that doesn't have a lockout chip. They shouldn't be too hard to find, I've come across several around where I am.

That won't help, the region lock and TMSS are different things.

Anyway, there is a Game Genie code to run this game in a US system. Look at this Sega-16 post for details, from a thread full of Game Genie region-lock-breaking codes for lots of games that are locked! http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showpost.php?p=184775&postcount=11

Won't running a PAL game on a U.S. system screw with the speed or something like that?

Yes indeed Tony, however this is only true for games that were optimized in the PAL region. Thunder Force 4 comes to mind initially and I'm certain there are more.

As for what a Mega Key looks like, I'm happy to oblige.

I got this as an alternative to not modifying my NTSC-J MegaDrive 2 and pardon the fact it's not an official product I've been pretty satisfied with the results. Games like Shining Force, Splatterhouse 2, Jurassic Park, and Virtua Racing are what I've needed it for. Not a big hassle although with VR plugged in, it's setup needing a lot of clearance.

I apologize. There is indeed a code to make it run via a Game Genie. Here are the codes:

Master Code - AJBT-AA5J
Region Lock Disabled (European Version) - B32A-CA50

For what it's worth, though, here is a pic of my Master Key 3:

I'll have to do more research then, I don't want to spread incorrect information.

It depends on the game, some European Mega Drive games are actually the same as the NTSC versions and play incorrectly on PAL systems(black bars on the screen and they play at the wrong speed). Some games were designed to detect which region they were being played in and had different title screens and languages that would be used. Most early European games should play fine on Genesis systems, I have a Mega Drive copy of Shadow Dancer that plays fine, and I had a copy of Kid Chameleon that also played fine.

Region-locked Genesis games didn't come around until about 1993, pretty late in the Genesis' lifespan.

Some games are multi-region as Gameguy said. For example Altered Beast. Put an American Genesis cartridge in a Japanese Megadrive and you'll get Japanese text.

What's the point of Switch 1?

What's the point of Switch 1?

To make sure you know how to read the sticker?

What's the point of Switch 1?

I would guess that the four position dip switch modules were cheaper than the three position.

Oddly enough, I need to use switch 1 (with switch 3) to get Bare Knuckle III to run on my Genesis...

The 1st Mega Key also used 4 dips, so I'm assuming it was cheaper to use the same parts for the 2nd?

Not necessarily true, 1992 had region locking in the form of Shining Force. Even Splatterhouse 2 was released in 1992 and has region locking. Now 1991, I highly doubt games from that year or earlier had any system in place but 1992 is definitely when it started. From 1993 on region locking was definitely more common-place, I'll agree to that.

As for the second point, plenty games were designed this way, just to name a few:
Ghouls N Ghosts becomes Daimakaimura
Truxton becomes Tatsujin
Fire Shark becomes Same! Same! Same!
Daisenpuu becomes Twin Hawk
& Grind Stormer becomes V-Five (what's interesting about GS is that both games are selectable in the options menu yet depending on the region of the console will boot in the appropriate version, really solid game)

I remember doing an article on the Magic Key III on the original OPCFG several years ago. I ran almost all of my Genesis games through it to see what would happen. Some of them changed, some of them didn't and I ended up posting all of the results in the article. Check it out: http://opcfg.kontek.net/archive/converterfun.html

The best one had to be Mystic Defender, seeing as how it had a bilingual setting and would switch over to Kujakuo 2. I was disappointed that Last Battle, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle and Splatterhouse 2 didn't change, though.

Hey, nice write up! That was a good read. I never knew the Magic Key III had some interesting effects on those games...

What exactly is in a Magic Key III? I'm guessing it's sort of like a cartridgized version of the region mod. Would it be difficult to reproduce it using a Game Genie shell? I'd take up a project like that.

Thanks! I probably would have never tried unless I either got really bored or someone suggested it to me. Luckily geelw suggested it before I got bored. LOL

@TonyTheTiger - Yeah, that's basically what it is. I have no idea how you'd go about making one, though.

Unfortunately, this is one time the internet is of no use. There's so very little info about the Magic Key III as it is.

Not much info, huh? I believe it. I'd never heard of it until someone sold it to me, and I kinda wish I still had it. I needed it to play Alien Soldier and Golden Axe III, but it went when they went. That scan of the box in the article is all I have left of it.

I can't stand Mega Man Wily Wars, it's slow.
