View Full Version : Classic Games You Still Suck At

As much as I've always loved video games, there were some games I just never got the hang of. Even today, if I picked up the game, I still wouldn't get very far.
So what games from your childhood do you still struggle with?
Now, when I mean struggle, I don't mean "I got to the final boss and then got my ass kicked (like me in Super Mario Bros. 2)," I mean you've never gotten to the final boss without cheating.
For me, the games I always struggled with were:
Mike Tyson's Punch Out (I STILL can't beat Bald Bull)
Super Punch Out (Damn that Masked Muscle)
Mega Man 6 (some of those Robot Masters are impossible)
and, of course, Battletoads.

I find unfortunately, many games I either get bored with or they get too hard to play mid way.

Shmups. All shmups. I used to be awesome at Galaga, getting to atleast level 40 before dying, now it's lower than 20. I should practice but I don't like the genre much.

I suck at Mega Man 1.
To be fair, Mega Man 1 is ridiculously hard compared to just about everything else in the series. Once I get to Wily's Fortress, I give up.

Castlevania... Never did beat it, and I'm wondering if I ever will.

I can't even get past the first screen in Elec Man's stage.

I definitely agree on Kid Icarus. Another game I never improved at was T&C Surfing. I could only get through the skateboarding section if I got lucky.

I've always and apparently will always be terrible at Spy Hunter.

Most platformers. I just played Castlevania a couple days ago, and was doing fine up to the mummy boss. Even if I beat them, though, I'll get wasted a few times in the underground part, guaranteed.

God, it's just about every classic game that isn't an RPG for me. Mostly bc I just don't have the patience to get better at a game, replaying the same stage over and over and over again until I get the hang of it... It's just not fun. I want new levels, new challenges... not being stuck in the same spot. I've found that many classic games built upon the arcade philosophy of "hit 'em hard so they need to keep feeding quarters," except that this is even true of games that are LONG and not just being artificially lengthened.
I suck at shoot em ups such as Stinger. Just when I think I'm doing good, I die and then die some more, then I just get angry. The main reason I will never be able to beat Guardian Legend is because I can't beat the last boss in the last flying level, so much for that Guardian.

I'm a mess after Aran Ryan in Super Punch-Out. I've never even seen the last few boxers in 15 years of owning the game.

Seriously, the learning curve on Super Punch-Out is ridiculously steep. On those rare occassions that I got past Masked Muscle, Aran Ryan blew me away. Such a hard friggin' game.

Mike Tyson's Punch Out (I STILL can't beat Bald Bull)
I'm your gal if you need PunchOut help. Beaten it multiple times over, once famously without getting hit a single time.
Can't redo that last bit for the life of me but if you ever want help or tips feel free to chat. MTPO might be the only game where I feel confident enough to want to help others instead of most other classic games where *I'm* asking for the help! :D
As for me... well after watching "Until We Win"'s Battletoads episode I don't think I'll EVER beat Battletoads.
Still - games that I can't seem to grasp the strategy of:
Contra - I beat this once, with a friend, with massive 30 life code use. Beat it on one life? Oh god no. That leads to...
Metal Slug - I LOVE me some Slug, even though I'm straight up awful at all of them. I only beat the first one on MVS and that was with unlimited credits. Love 'em, suck at 'em. :D
R-Type - I've only recently gotten into shmups but... wow. This is hard. I feel like I do better at "bullet hell" shootemups than I do with R-Type. Or maybe I just suck? Who knows. :)

Sonic the Hedgehog games. I can blow through a lot of other platformers, including Kid Icarus, the Mario series... heck, I've gotten past Clone Mega Man on MM1 and am getting good at Castlevania. But Sonic 2, 3, & Knuckles, I will die die die die die die die die die.

I've only beaten Contra with the 30 lives code and a friend, and even then, it was a miracle.
And now that I think about it, I may have beaten Battletoads with a friend as well. Or at least gotten pretty far in. Damn, that game is hard.

Because I'd always get pissed off at it and play something else instead, it took me 10 years to beat the first level of Ghosts 'n' Goblins. Five years later and I still can't beat the second.

Defender. Geez, how can anybody be good that?
Oh yeah, especially with that wierd arcade setup on Stargate/Defender II.
Now that game is tough.

I completely agree. If you're trouble is against the final bosses, then just use cut (or cutter?) man's weapon. When it reaches the boss' target spot, press pause repeatedly. It's a cheat, but it still does the trick.
However, if you rather beat it without using that trick... well, that's another situation entirely.

I've had to credit feed Ghosts N Goblins on Capcom Generation 2 Saturn, Capcom Classic Collection Reloaded, and on Capcom Classics Collection 1, both quests. I can usually get to the 5th level on a good day in one credit, but the last levels are just so overbearing with enemies (more so than the earlier levels) that my good game soon goes sour, but on the bright side, I can actually get somewhere in the game.

The Contra games beats me everytime :S
Contra has to be beaten with 30 lives the first time around, Super C gives you 15 but its like twice as hard.
if you can eventually beat Contra with only 5-10 lives I still consider that l33t. I dont think I have ever done it in under 20

Galaxian.
Yes, I still suck at the original Galaxian. I can usually never make it past the first stage.
I'm really good at Galaga, but I can't play the original worth a damn.

Never been that big of a Final Fantasy fan even though I own all the games (I own a lot of games... Hey, I'm the Game Dude, lol) but I still at all of them. Haven't had much time to play them lately anyway. I find that RPG games get boring really quickly because they're slow. Maybe this is because I played too much Pokemon when I was a kid... I don't know. It's a real shame, though.

Kid Icarus!!! ERRRRGHHHH!!!!
Blaster Master!! (save feature would be nice!)
I used to have a horrible time on Kid Icarus. Then I just kept playing one day and found that after you get through the first three levels, where you are climbing vertically, it gets so much easier.
I would die all the time on the first three because I would fall down after the screen scrolled. Or I would duck and fall through the stoopid platforms. Once if changes to side scroll and you actually get some power ups, it is really very easy!

You and me both. Usually I get pissed and give up there, or trying to get over the pits at the start of the Guts Man stage.
