Alright, I have had this thing for years and I have no idea if it is something different from the finished game. There are problems when playing the game as well. Like, It only saves the game when it wants so. Also, the chao garden locks up when you leave it. Could this be a beta something? I have never been able to find this sort of cover/scan of this cartridge.

WARNING BIG PICTURES AHEAD :)

That's a pirate game, not a prototype

I KNEW IT. I knew it wasn't a normal game.

Unfortunately, the pirate games aren't too reliable, especially when it comes to battery back-up RAM. That's likely where you're getting the saving issues from, and it sounds to me like the reason the Chao Garden locks up on exit is because it's trying to write a save but is unable to, so it chokes. Pirates can sometimes be reliable, but oftentimes they're not. I have a GBA multicart that seemed to be the proper size, but refused to fit for some reason; when I finally jury-rigged it, it just refused to work. $15 down the drain :(

We did an article on how to spot Game Boy Advance bootlegs a few years back in Tips & Tricks Magazine.

Does it make me cool or special that I got something like this?

Or does it make me look like I got ripped off?

If anything I'd say option #2, but I guess it depends on how much you paid for it. Pirate carts like that can be bought in bulk in china for <$2 each. If buying a single game...maybe $5 is acceptable. But then again you could get a good quality GBA flash cart for $10-15 so I can't understand why anyone would want a pirate cartridge with just 1 game (if you decided that you in fact wanted to play pirated games, I don't condone it).

I'm sure 2nd hand Sonic GBA games aren't terribly expensive, probably not much more expensive than a pirate.

That said, you can probably open up your cartridge and either resolder the battery to the pcb or solder a new battery to the pcb. It will hopefully solve the problems you are having.

I have that exact bootleg. About 5 years back I went on a binge of gba bootleg collecting. I'm not sure what article you're talking about DreamTR, but if you can get me an issue number I'm sure it's been scanned. I'd like to read more on the subject, maybe locate the origins of some of them. I have about 40 or so of them ATM.

What makes you say that? To my knowledge there isn't a Tips 'N Tricks scan archive around.
