View Full Version : JVC x'eye and CDX AC adapter Question.

I just bought a JVC X'eye off ebay for $25 with no connections. I had read somewhere that a genesis 2 ac adapter works but after reading further I found that it can cause damage. I was using the Genesis 2 adapter and everything was working great but now I am hesitant. What kind of damage will this do to the system? I was using the same adapter for my cdx that I got a few years ago with no apparent problems. What suggestions can you guys give me so that I don't damage two rare systems?

I use a Genesis 2 adapter on mine, and have not had any issues yet. I don't know, some people say it will hurt it, some say it's fine. I'd PREFER the JVC adapter, but I don't play mine often enough that I think it will cause damage. I have heard that for just playing the carts it's fine, but the stress happens when you are playing the CD games, so I dunno. Like I said though, I've had mine for a while, and no problems yet, but I also do not play it every day or anything.

Hmm.. misinformation.
There are quite a few threads about this, but this is what I have handy from something I wrote for my site awhile back...
"The JVC X'Eye uses the same sized power jack as the Genesis 2 and Genesis 3. However the power consumption is very different. A JVC X'Eye requires 9.5v at 1.5A. A Genesis 2 power adapter outputs 10v but only 0.85A, which underrates the power output quite a bit. Although a JVC X'Eye will run with a Genesis 2 power adapter, it's really not healthy for the console and has a potential to cause irreversible damage. Circuits draw current, they aren't given it, so anything at 1.5A or over would be fine as the JVC X'Eye would only draw what it needs - the 1.5 amps. Next to rolling the bones with a Genesis 2 adapter, the next solution is to use a Sony PSOne power supply which outputs 2.0A but it only outputs 7.5v. That's still not good as it's possible to drift under the minimum working voltage of the power regulators, which again causes things not to work correctly and parts to fry."

Yeah I've read that a bunch of times already, but still have yet to have an issue with it. People are just getting too technical about it all. Plug it in, and it works. I have yet heard from anyone that they fried their X'Eye using a Genesis 2 cable. Maybe once I hear from someone personally, that they fried their system, then I will worry about it.

That is hands down the stupidest thing one can say about powering classic consoles. Hey, guess what, an NES AC Adapter fits in a Famicom, must work, huh? (This is horribly wrong by the way, no one try that) You may have it bite your own ass one day but please don't tell other people to do it as well.

The CDX and X Eye power supplies have the same output, google sega parts, you could still order the cdx power unit as of a few months ago.

A lot of us have said this, and yet, people still refuse to believe... A Genesis 2 power supply doesn't have the appropriate juice rating for neither the CDX or X'Eye..

Try Left Coast Games, the inherited sega parts, I just checked, the cdx power supply is still available for 16.99 plus shipping, same output, I've tried it and it works just fine.

Cool, I know for years you could buy the JVC X'Eye power supply from JVC Service but it's been a long time since they've had it.

Agh, they only accept check/money order.

BAD!
That has to be one of the dumbest things I have heard. If it isn't made for it or the right specs, even if it seems to work, it will damage something. When it comes to a system like X'EYE, there aren't enough around for people to collect let alone dance on the edge of disaster with.

Just to be sure here, but using a PSOne power adaptor is acceptable, right??

Why not go to Radio Shack (or somewhere similar) and get one? They have those wall worts that have about any combo of volts and amps you could think of.... :-/

I was actually going to PM you about this idea that I just had a few days ago, but decided against it for some reason:
There are several cheap adapters on eBay that are 9.5v and 1A (or more). I know for a fact that a Canon scanner adapter* fits an X'Eye, as well as a Genesis 2 adapter. Couldn't you buy one adapter of the proper voltage (and amperage) and a Genesis adapter and splice the end from the Genesis adapter onto the adapter of a proper voltage?
*I actually used a 9.5v 300mA (0.3A) Canon Canoscan scanner adapter on my X'Eye just to test it out for a few minutes. Genesis games worked fine and I played Sewer Shark without problem. I know it's not a healthy solution for this system, but I only used it for a few minutes, so if anyone has a Canon scanner of the right type and an adapter-less X'Eye, this can be used, but I wouldn't suggest it as a permanent solution.

I bought this after reviewing it with InsaneDavid several months ago for my cordless Xeye, works like a charm.

Yes, that will work, although you'd want at least 1.5A, and you have to get the pos/neg correct (for most systems, and I'd assume these). Some of the thrifts I frequent have hundreds of ac adapters hanging on racks, and I've found suitable replacements by replacing connectors.

I used a Genesis 2 power supply on my X'Eye and noticed that it started struggling with Sega CD games. I didn't notice the same problem with my CDX but I use the X'Eye power supply now, just to be on the safe side. Perhaps it causes no problems when you're just playing Genesis cartridge games, as that would require less power.
But think about it -- as a separate unit, the Sega CD has its own power supply. So obviously, a combo unit needs more power than a lone Genesis. The Sega CD contains a CD drive, a 68000 processor, a scaling chip, and an audio chip. All of that stuff needs juice. Also I think the X'Eye has stronger video and audio output.

pfffft! I meant 1.5A. Argh, sometimes typos can really suck.

Well sorry, was just speaking from my experience. I am in no way a stupid/dumb person. Like I said, I have yet to hear of one damaging an X'Eye. And the only reason I use it is because I can never find the proper power supply. If it were easily attainable I'd get one. Now that I see some links for some alternatives maybe I'll get one. But please no one call me dumb I really hate that.

I called them and they told me that I would most likely get a genesis 2 adapter.

I ordered a "CDX AC adapter" from Sega-Parts a while back (on the previous version of the site) and they just sent me a Genesis 2 one, which is also what I'd received with the CDX when I bought it from another site. Lame.

I had the same problem when I got my SEGA CDX. I used the Genesis' 2 power adaptor for a while, but never really played on my SEGA CDX for too long for fear of it frying. I got this (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sima+-+Universal+AC+Adapter/7011994.p?id=1099392727414&skuId=7011994&st=SIMA%20SUP-60&cp=1&lp=1) after it being suggested by someone else on this board. It outputs 9.5V and 1.5A and comes with an adaptor for the SEGA CDX. It can be found for much cheaper on Ebay if you are willing to buy there.
I haven't really used it too much though to see if it messed up my SEGA CDX though, so as always YMMV.
