Edward http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/11/lastname580.jpg of New Jersey was so happy with DICE's decision to support dedicated servers for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (http://joystiq.com/tag/battlefield-bad-company-2) that he sent the company a $60 check (http://blogs.battlefield.ea.com/battlefield_bad_company/archive/2009/11/03/a-thank-you-to-eddie-j-fan-kit-v-2.aspx). Although it's pretty hard to look up the http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/11/lastname580.jpg family of New Jersey to ask Eddie why he sent the money, we'll guess it had something to do with Infinity Ward's decision to not allow dedicated PC servers (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/19/petition-for-dedicated-servers-in-modern-warfare-2-growing-rapid/) for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

As for what DICE plans to spend the money on, Battlefield Producer Gordon Van Dyke gave no indications. Some Battlefield 1943 maps (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/08/pax-2009-battlefield-1943-producer-talks-lack-of-dlc/) would be nice. The intern could probably get it done for $60, right?http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif (http://www.joystiq.com)DICE receives fan letter in thanks of Bad Company 2 dedicated servers (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/04/dice-receives-fan-letter-in-thanks-of-bad-company-2-dedicated-se/) originally appeared on Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com) on Wed, 04 Nov 2009 10:15:00 EST. Take that, Infinity Ward!

No dedicated servers for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 on the PC?

Why even bother incorporating online multiplayer into it if they're just going to cripple it? Dedicated servers are a standard for PC gaming and a necessity to get a decent experience with more than a handful of people.

This doesn't mean that the game is going to only be playable via Lan only... it means that IW has modified the server side of things...
taken from a second Joystiq article
Bowling revealed that matchmaking within Modern Warfare 2 would be reliant on proprietary server technology (called IWNet), and wouldn't allow users to host their own dedicated servers.

Just a way for them to control game types and mods really, and to piss off a huge group of people that want to run their own servers.

Judging by IW's recent comment, I wouldn't be surprised if there was no lan support at all.

I didn't think they meant that, I just assumed they meant that the player had to host a match, rather than allow for dedicated servers.

However, this doesn't sound like a bad solution. I'd rather the hosting be up to the company, I've been pleased when I've encountered that in various programs such as iRacing. Never see bad performance in iRacing and don't have to worry about the quality of the server I'm on and if it's going to die halfway through a race thanks to the quality of their servers and the elimination of 3rd party hosting.
