I have found Nintendo Power, Playstation magazine, xbox magazine and gamepro..... am I missing any others or one that might be a must read/subscribe? Kinda getting back into the gaming hobby and out of the loop on current reading material.

Game Informer's recent redesign and better focus has made it relevant.

I recommend N4G (news for gamers), it is very comprehensive and up-to-date.

Really, the only modern day gaming magazine worth a damn is Edge from the UK. Unfortunately, it costs like $65 for a 1 year subscription, or something like that, because it has to be imported. Still, easily the best gaming magazine available at the moment. I think Play is a bit overrated and somewhat pretentious if you ask me. Game Informer is decent considering you can get a 1 year subscription to it for like 8 bucks via Ebay.

I haven't read GamePro since the mid 90's, but I've heard that John Davison is taking over the mag, so I'm sure he will improve it's overall quality soon enough.

I like GamePro and trust it for being more informative and neutral than any other magazine. The only problem it has is what GameFAQs calls "reassurance topics".

But yeah, GameInformer and Play are also relevant. I haven't opened either in quite a while so I'm not sure how GI is with the new layout.

The console-specific ones are good if you are a hardcore enthusiast of a certain system. The main complaint I have with Nintendo Power is the cheesiness of the Reader's Pulse replies. Chuck Norris and Mr. T jokes are fun but NP is just milking it.

WTF Happened to it anyway?

The parent company that owns 1up and EGM decided to shut it down. I believe the original founder bought the rights to EGM and has annouced it will be back soon.

I have subscriptions for OXM, Gamepro, Play and Game Informer. All are relevant for what they are marketed towards. Now that Sid has left Gamepro it's no longer PS3 slanted. Theres also a few good import magazines out there but because of their cover price I only browse thru them at Barnes and Nobles.

But even that way, the magazine is good and i fully recommend it to any enthusiast gamer.

EGM gone to hell thanks to Dan Hsu in my opinion; it was the only magazine that i consistently read over almost 16 years ..

Nothing has come close to NEXT GENERATION.

I've heard the new EGM is going to have somewhat limited distribution and it could cost a bit more than the old version. Here's a mock up of the first new cover, from Steve Harris' Twitter page:

Well, if you are into classic gaming, which I hope you would be kicking it here, I work for Classic Video Gamer Magazine. We are only quarterly, but I think we do a pretty damn good job covering retro stuff, including the new clone systems and hopefully my idea for a section called "Retro Evolved". I guess we will see. If interested, a link to the magazines site is below. You can get the magazine in print or in Digital Download format also. Have a good one.

Ugh. I had a subscription when they crapped out, with no warning even. I wondered WTF I never got another issue, or never saw it in stores.

The thing Play needs more than anything is a fucking editor with eyeballs. I bought the November issue on a whim and someone let half of the magazine slip through with spaces where apostrophes should be. It's very distracting, almost as bad as the rampant misspellings and questionable grammar. Also, one of the worthless pages covering manga is repeated a few pages later with a different page number, as if they needed an extra page so everything fit and just crammed it in there so as not to interrupt the flow.

I don't usually agree with him or his unexplainable hard-on for every platformer on earth or every piece of pedo-baiting anime/manga, but you've got to at least respect how long Dave Halverson's been around with little to no corporate support in what has become a cutthroat industry with razor-thin profit margins. If only he would hire an editor who reads on at least a high school level to give his magazine a once-over every month (and cut the bullshit sections and what have to be paid previews for browser games and shit like that).

Nothing has come close to NEXT GENERATION.

The early run of Next-Generation was fantastic. Nobody covered the "industry" of gaming like Next-Gen. However, their actual game coverage was spotty. They had a habit of hyping up games to unprecedented levels, and then when it came time to review the game, you got a couple of paragraphs (if you're lucky), and a 5 star review system. Basically, their focus was primarily on the business side of the gaming industry, and previews of games with tons of hype.

I still feel that the Halverson era of GameFan was the best gaming magazine we've ever seen. Yes, you have to take their enthusiasm of EVERYTHING, with a grain of salt, and you couldn't trust alot of their reviews, but they didn't waste any pages on bullshit. They got straight to the point, and told it like it really was. Consider EGM by comparison. In 99 percent of EGM's previews (during the same time frame), their previews were basically press releases, or what you could get off the back of the box. No effort was made whatsoever to talk about how the game was coming along. Not so with GameFan. They would "almost" review the game during the preview. They would always let you know that it's just a preview and things could change prior to the release, but they would let you know how things were shaping up, and whether or not they felt the game would likely be something to keep your eye on. They also had great coverage of imports, and covered the next-gen systems of their day earlier than anybody else, and with more detail and passion.

I get Game Informer (decent), Retro Gamer (awesome but starting to repeat itself) and PLAY.

I like PLAY... I really do... but you can't trust its reviews. They cut out the numerical score system for one reason... so advertisers can't quantify what score PLAY gives a game. They have given stellar reviews to games that the rest of the gaming press overwhelmingly HATED. These games were usually on the cover at some point. Some of the staff is pretentious as hell (though I do like that Heather Campbell).

I have to give PLAY props for some really good writing and interviews, great artwork, and the occasional spot-on review. Plus there's the whole GAMEFAN history... man that was an awesome mag, better than the stellar Next Generation.

I gave up on GamePro years ago... childish writing.

I think i may have to subscribe to EDGE.

So, pass that pic on, eh? I've never seen a Finnish videogame mag! (Hmm, I have game mags from the US, UK, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Korea and Colombia... Anyone have mags from even "odder" countries?)
