best place to buy classic games?

Craigslist, or a local retro games store.

Thrift stores and pawn shops. Anywhere you can find them. If you're somehwere you think might have games, look and ask.

Don't forget flea markets. They're usually teeming with people who are looking to sell old games -- that's how I've started up the SNES collection.

definetly keep hitting up any thrift stores you can find, flea markets, garage sales, yard sales, craigslist, kijii, the newspaper, auctions, pawn shops, retro game shops, church sales etc. (yard sale season is over atm)

Every year it seems like it gets harder and harder to find stuff in the wild. Alot of people have adopted the mentality that ALL old games = a gold mine, and nobody really wants to let a pile of games go for cheap. More and more people seem to be throwing their basement collections on ebay. I think in years to come ebay will be the only viable source.

There is no magic answer, so if you were expecting "The NES,SNES, Genesis, and N64 Shoppe in Hartford, Massachusetts," you're gonna be disappointed. The usual suspects still - as ALWAYS - apply:

Garage sales
Thrift stores
Flea markets
Craigslist
Other online auction sites
Other online classic game stores (use Google to find them)
Other local classic game stores (ditto)

thanks for the replies. I've tried thrift shops here locally for 3 years and never found even one game. I do find a few at pawn shops but they are always way overpriced, sometimes $20 a pop for the common mario or sonic game. I guess I'll give craiglist a shot and see if I can't find some flea markets in some of the surrounding towns. I just haven't had much luck finding this classic gaming cartridges. I may just take the plunge and spend a few hundred on ebay lots and just hope I don't double up too many titles.

are there any sites, maybe even this one, that has traders that trade off doubles to each other? Say I have 2 mario and you have 2 sonic so I trade one of my marios for one of your sonics?

the key is to keep going back, because it's all random. They may have nothing one week and next week they are stuffed with stuff. Look widely, go beyond your own area if need be.

I agree that persistence is the key.

if you go once a month to one place, it will be rare to find something. from goodwills and thrifts, i got all of my cd-i stuff minus zelda. hell, i snagged gunstar heroes for genesis for $4 at a thrift and the dp price guide says it goes for 20

I go to two Play N Trades, two pawn shops, and a used PC shop, all 5 of these places have lots to offer, but sometimes the selection can be anemic once you find enough and the selection of what you're looking for gets whittled down. Gameboy games to me have become harder and harder to find, at least the good games. I don't buy every game ever made, but I do go for what I want to own and will play.

Whereabouts are you located? There's plenty of Digital Press visitors all over the country, if we knew a little more about your area maybe someone could point you in the right direction.
