Seriously? There isn't a thread on this already?
Last night was my first midnight release. I was in and out at Best Buy (without a preorder) while the Gamestop down the street had about seventy cars in the parking lot. I played multiplayer for a couple hours and it's pretty damn fun. The gunship is a blast, as is the Predator missle. My new favorite thing to do is steal the enemy's care packages. I watched one guy call one in and then promptly killed him and stole the payload. Turns out it was a Predator missle, which I then used to kill that same guy again.
Sniping is silky smooth and seems to be more powerful. The starting rifle is the Barret this time, which is amazing. I don't think it ever took more than one shot to kill somebody.
There were a few things I didn't like. The main one is the lack of party chat. When entering a game you are forced to switch to game chat. This is a major negative, as 90% of the people who use headsets are extremely annoying. My two friends and I could barely talk to each other because of this, and it definitely bumped the fun down a few notches. I really hope they patch this out.
The second is all of the bonuses. When I saw them in the videos I was afraid they would get distracting, and sure enough, they are annoying as hell. Every once in awhile you'll get a bonus like "First Blood" or something and it will flash up on the screen. This seems very arcade-y to me, like something you'd see in UT3. It just doesn't fit in COD. So anyway, I love to snipe. When sniping you get four bonuses almost every single time. It gets old fast when you get "One Shot One Kill", "Headshot", "Long Distance Kill", and "Accuracy" every single kill. Sometimes you'll get "Buzzkill" or "Payback" on top of that. It's way too much.
So those are my initial impressions. Tonight I'm planning on starting the campaign, playing a bunch more multiplayer, and maybe trying the new Spec Ops mode.

I was looking for one this morning as well! I picked my copy up at Toys R Us since they were offering the $20 gift card with purchase. Unfortunately, it didn't include the Hardened edition, only the standard edition so I go the standard instead. I'm hoping the get the Prestige down the road a bit, which will include the hardened edition too. I haven't even gotten it in the 360 yet, but I hope to in a couple of hours.
Did anyone see the long trailer at the beginning of Monday Night Football last night? Man it looked awesome, even getting my wife's attention! Can't wait to get started.

yah im in love, already sunk about 6 hours into the online hahaha. Did anyone pick up one of the modern warfare controllers? i was thinking about it but didn't want to waste the money if it turned out to be uncomfortable or something...it is a great looking controller at least but i am always afraid when people try something new....

My Prestige Edition has just shipped from Pennsylvania. Hopefully it will arrive by Friday.
I'm probably going to wait until Christmas for this and have someone in my family get it for me, if anything I'll buy a used copy at Gamestop and save myself a few dollars. I'm not too big into the COD games anyway, meaning I suck and want to spare myself the embarrassment.
Gotta say tho the game does look mighty impressive, a big step up from Modern Warfare and I'm pleased with a few of the things they added to the multiplayer mode. I got Assassins Creed 2 next week anyway and I'm trying to limit my spending, otherwise I would've probably picked it up last night at work on a whim.
edit: Scratch all of that, I ended up picking the game up on a whim and threw it on my Target card. There I go being a crafty consumer.

When did you pre-order? I ordered my copy late night on the 8th and it's scheduled to be here tonight. Didn't think it had a chance of getting here by release day either since they waited until yesterday evening to ship.
You should still be able to get a refund on your shipping costs though. Just let Amazon know about the delay.
Haven't decided what I'm going to spend my $20 Amazon game gift card on. Probably get some MS points or probably use it towards Liberty City Stories.

How could Amazon not realize that this was going to be such a huge launch?

Good question.
Are you going to play the game? Yes
Are you not going to play the game? No
They work but they are pretty disorienting. May be getting used to NV and adjusting your depth perception. You won't be driving with your lights off with these any time soon. For an amusing diversion and conversation piece AND if you're going to play the game, definitely go for it.

Goggles are really badass. Easily worth $70. I can see clear across the street. You just have to get used to the orientation as your eyes are pretty much a few inches ahead of where you are used to. Best part is that they are like binoculars or microscopes - you can take off your glasses to use them!

Yeah, it got here yesterday, so it was only a one day delay, but it was still really annoying. I had Tuesday all planned out to do a marathon session and wasn't able to. This is the first time that Amazon's dropped the ball on anything I've ordered, so I'll probably give them a pass, especially since they refunded my shipping.
The game is awesome, though. I haven't touched the campaign, but the multiplayer is so fun. There are only a few maps that I don't like - only really the sniper havens like Afghan and Terminal.

I started the campaign on hardened last night. I complete the Pit in 29.05 after a number of tries. I'm dying quite a bit, but it isn't too bad. So far the level in northern Virginia has been my favorite.
I've also put about eight hours into multiplayer and it has been pretty amazing. I've been playing with at least five friends the entire time so that has helped, but the lack of party chat hasn't been as big of a problem as I had anticipated. There haven't been nearly as many annoying kids as I was expecting, and you can mute somebody with two button presses. I still think the callsigns look like crap, and all of the bonuses do get annoying, but in the end it's a great great game.

The Rio de Janeiro level sucked. I had to knock it down to the easy difficulty to get past it. Now I can't seem to up the difficulty back up.

Yeah, I laughed when I saw the NOVA gas station.
The Rio level is the one where I died the most. I'd poke my head around a corner and get lit up. I'd retreat, and then do it again. It'd take about three times to find the shooter sometimes.
I agree about the online achievements, I can't believe they left them out again. The only reason Modern Warfare franchise is as popular as it is is because of the multiplayer. I'd be willing to bet a good percentage of the people playing haven't even played the campaigns.

Being a bit of an achievement whore, I find that when I get into a game that has online stuff, and then find that now we've got to set up boost parties, farm kills ect because the online components are dead (not that most are going to be that great, since well so many games online components are horribly broken or were poor tack-ons, that should have never happened, and now they've got achievement points added to them) it sucks ass. Games get their online components taken down, locking those achievements out for later players as well. When you make games with online achievements a few things happen tend to happen. Either the achievements are bad or they take away from the online component of the game. I'm glad that CoD4, CoD:WaW (2 0g achievemnts, for Prestiging don't count) and CoD:MW2 have shyed away from online achievements because of that. I want to play the online to play it, not to have to grind my way through umteen million kills/weapon kills/wins/matches played to pop some achievements. Achievements like that don't make people want to play the game willingly, it makes it a chore that no one likes.

I both agree and disagree with you. While I definitely can live without the Perfect Dark Zero and Gears of War esque "kill 1,000-10,000 opponents online" achievements, I actually like the simpler ones like Halo 3's "stick five opponents with sticky grenades in any multiplayer matchmatching playlist" achievements. So some online achievements are fine but some just aren't worth it.

Well finally got my copy today been a bit under the weather so I waited. So far I am pleased with online/offline play. Single player camp. is good a bit challenging, lol I died in the streets of the capture the guy mission because someone snuck up behind me? As for online I think it'll take me awhile to get into the play as I have long loved the addictive COD 4 online play, but I'm leaving this one open as far as judgement goes till later.

Finished the Campaign on Normal in just under 6 hours. That Rio level ticked me off too -- the one section where you were going up the hill, ducking into what felt like a million buildings and getting your head blown off over and over really got to me also! lol. I think the only other massively frustrating part was one section of "Estate" (in Act III) where I nearly lowered the difficulty due to sheer frustration too (i.e. one checkpoint in the midst of combat), which seems to be par for the course in every COD game at one stage or another.
Overall I liked it, but the "story" was really thin and the "twists" at the end were insipid. Sure, it's all about the action, but there was hardly any attempt at a narrative other than static pre-level chatter and such.
The multi-player is also plenty of fun -- but so far I don't like it nearly as much as COD4, as least as far as the map design goes. Lots of buildings, floors, alleyways -- I guess it's designed so the games move along quicker, but it seems to be more difficult and a lot of the levels tend to blend together IMO.
Overall it's still great stuff -- but the map design is a tad disappointing IMO.

When I wrote up my little paragraph initally, at the end I had made a list of games that did online achievements well. And at first Halo 3 was on there, all the achievements were 5g and pretty much the only way to get them was to play in lonewolves, not only keeping it out of the general team MP, but every other thing as well. Then they did their addons, and made them bad, find skulls in MP maps, get a bunch of turrent kills? Yes all of them can be boosted with friends and done in 'fun' matches, but they pulled away from their own intelligent design of before (all to get people to buy the map packs).
I really don't mind online achievements, especially if the game is good (I had a fine time getting the online achievements in BF43), but since most of the games onlines really should have never been created and are so full of crap achievements, I just tend to be a sad panda. And now back to grinding out my 2500 kills in Turning Point online....
To keep this on topic, I'm in DC after just getting out of Rio. Veteran hasn't been too bad yet, which makes me a happy camper.

I finished the campaign Friday night. I accidentally lowered the difficulty halfway through, so now I'm going back through it on Veteran. I'll admit to not really understanding the story. I tend to forget what happened in the level before, so the hour breaks between narrative kind of mess me up. Oh well, it was still fun. It was a bit heavy-handed at times, but not enough to be cheesy.
I played some multiplayer last night with a couple friends and had the night absolutely ruined by non-party chatter. It must have been idiot night on Live because we couldn't find a single game that didn't have at least three mouthy bigots. Again, why in the heck can we not have party chat?!

That is my biggest complaint of the game. Why Cant we have teh party chat?? You can do a private chat with one person, but if you want to have 3 in the chat , your SOL. I think they are trying to force teamwork. There were complaints in the past where people complained that nobody talked during games because they were all in party chat. My friends and I like Capture the Flag, and that is one of the game modes where you cannot do party Chat. It sucks. We are considering playing COD World at War again, because we can still talk to one another.
We can oly hope that they patch that crap out of the game.

That doesn't apply to Team Deathmatch though, because there isn't any respawn time, yet that is one of the modes that doesn't allow party chat. I can understand how that would cause an unfair advantage in Search and Destroy, and maybe even Hardcore DM, but when there isn't any respawn time it doesn't make any sense.

Story mode was MUCH faster than I expected, even on Veteran. Total game time was just a smidge over 10 hours, and would have been about an hour better had I not gotten 'stuck' in a few spots.
I only had a few spots where I was stuck for any length of time (A slightly bad Bone Yard save, and the horribly over effective soldiers in the final parts of 'Loose Ends' pissed me off greatly). There was one or two more, but I'm not remembering where those were now.
I'm slowly working through Spec Ops now. I can easily see spending an inordinate amount of time getting 3*'s on some of these levels. I've been screwed by a super AI with 3 kills to go on two or 3 different levels now on Veteran. Thus is life. Gives me something to do before I get into MP and have no more achievements to get.

Anyone else still playing this? I beat the campaign and my friend and I are working on spec ops. Most of the spec ops seem more annoying than fun, so it may be a while before we finish them. Multiplayer is awesome, though, especially since they fixed the javelin glitch.
Has anyone here tried out a knife class? I just created one today, and it is the most fun I've had with this game since it came out. Here's my loadout:
Primary: SMG (I use the UMP)
Secondary: Pistol with tactical knife (I use the magnum)
Perk 1: Marathon Pro
Perk 2: Lightweight Pro
Perk 3: Commando Pro
Deathstreak: I used Final Stand but might switch to Hardline
Grenades: Semtex, stun/flash
Check it out - it's tons of fun flying around the map, stabbing people in the face.

I beat the campaign on both Regular and Veteran and found all of the intel items. My buddy and I have about 6 stars to go on Spec Ops and we've loved every minute of it. There are a couple of cheap missions, especially towards the end, but overall I think it's a great edition to the game.
Personally I really hate the knife class, and my experience has shown that I'm not alone. In fact, it seems to be right up there with "camping" and "double shotgun guy" as being one of the most reviled things in mw2. It seems very un-COD-like to be able to speed around the map and knife guys while they shoot you. It doesn't make sense.

I'm right there with you carl. The most annoying things I've run into:
1) Akimbo Rangers. There's something to be said for a tactical shooter, when people can run around at full speed, jump and take you out in one blast from 20 yards away.
2) Knife classes. They get a priority on quicker knifes, even when you hit first, and can survive a full shotgun blast because of said priority.
3) Snipers with Thermal camping in glitched areas (e.g. crane/rooftops on a particular stage). They often get easy killstreaks because they're no where near the action.
Camping is annoying as well, but that's an FPS mainstay. The other annoying things are that you can join friends in-progress for a ranked match and tip the scales against the other team by purposely giving your friends kills and the ranked private match glitch, but hopefully the second one will be resolved shortly.

Goggles are really badass. Easily worth $70. I can see clear across the street. You just have to get used to the orientation as your eyes are pretty much a few inches ahead of where you are used to. Best part is that they are like binoculars or microscopes - you can take off your glasses to use them!

"Can you imagine if we had these when we were kids?"
"Even better, we've got 'em when we're 40!"
Step Brothers ftw!

Those aren't glitches, they are meant to be accessible. And to be fair, those spots are pretty difficult to get to without getting shot. And snipers are supposed to be nowhere near the action, they shoot from afar.
(If you can't tell, sniper is my class of choice. Give me a Barrett with a thermal and a silencer and I'll do some damage)

...how do you get on top of the roof or out on the crane in Highrise when there is no accessible way of getting there without a glitch then?

the crane has one arm swung over towards the room with the elevator in it. climb the ladder to get on top of the elevator, then jump off onto the crane. From there you can either go left out onto another arm, or go right to get to the building. If you go right you'll need to jump off onto the ledge on the side of the building, and from there you can crawl into the overhang on that side.
The roof on the other side is a little trickier. There is a section of scaffolding hanging down from one corner of the building. You need to jump off the side of the building at an angle and catch that scaffolding. 9/10 I miss that jump, it's very tricky for me to get right. If you catch the scaffolding you'll be able to climb it like a ladder. Climb it to the top and jump off onto the ledge. Now you need to walk on that ledge alllll the way to the other end of the building. You will most likely get shot while you're doing this. If you make it you have to jump onto the window-washer scaffolding, and then pull yourself up on top of the roof. This, of course, is when the enemy chooses to call in a chopper, so all of your hard work was for nothing.
I assure you, these aren't glitches.

I beat the campaign on both Regular and Veteran and found all of the intel items. My buddy and I have about 6 stars to go on Spec Ops and we've loved every minute of it. There are a couple of cheap missions, especially towards the end, but overall I think it's a great edition to the game.
I'm down to needing to 3* 7 Spec Ops levels (1 MP Bravo, 3 Charlie's, 1 Delta, and 2 Echo's). I went back through right after completion and ground out the missing intels (I really missed ALOT in the first play through). For whatever reason i've had little desire to play MP (and so far have played none), and I did play a decent chunk of MP in CoD4, so its not that i'm no fan of MP or anything, it just isn't calling out to me like it used to.

I can't even jump on scaffolding normally. I'll try this out though, thanks.

I'm always amused by reading Call of Duty players responses.
Stuff like "a guy can run around and knife people just doesn't seem fair", while they say nothing about helicopters or tactical nukes. Just admit that Call of Duty is in itself "not fair", the game is a twitch fest which comes down to "he who shoots first wins" to the EXTREME, period.
I personally wish this whole Call of Duty generation would just end so we can start getting some better first person shooters where there are actual gunfights that last awhile as opposed to turn corner....dead, run left....dead, jump over wall...dead.
I have the same problem with Gears of War, you have to sit there and wait after a frustrating death, just to restart match and die 60 seconds later, rinse, repeat. They try to make the game "seem" tactical, but anyone who knows should know it doesn't hold a candle to Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon and as far as "action" first person shooters it doesn't best Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, Half Life, Killzone 2 or Resistance.
I regard Call of Duty's multiplayer as the best of neither world, the single player is awesome stuff but man can we get some better fps's?? Sorry had to vent, seemed like the best place. :D

Spec ops is pretty cool, taken me and my buddy about 50 hours so far and we have one 3 star left (Wetwork). Taking down the juggernauts with explosives and knives...dumb.
Provides a lot of replay value in any event. You can't really whip through them on Veteran; I'm fairly good at online multiplayer in FPS, but the computer dudes in Spec Ops are crackshots. Even moreso than the enemies on Veteran campaign. Ridiculous.

Sounds like somebody isn't very good at COD multiplayer... :)
If you're playing Rust then yeah, it's a twitch fest. But if you're playing Wasteland and still trying to run-n-gun then you're just not playing it right.
You're right though, it's nowhere near as tactical or realistic as the R6 games.

I admit that I'm average at multiplayer - I get some kills, but usually die the same amount of times, or a few less. What I'd like to see is a multiplayer match where when you die, you die. You actually have to play like it's real life - communicating with your team, stealth movements, having a sniper/lookout positioned to watch enemy movements. Have a 6 vs. 6 matchup and when one team wins, they all win. It would promote teamwork and you could rank up your team and win more and more perks. Unfortunately, it would fail because younger gamers have no patience for that - it's all about racking up kills even if you get killed doing it. I'm a bit tired of the "banzai" charge mentality of online multiplayer, and I guess that's why I play the campaigns of the games, play local matches and private matches where we can play at a more strategic pace.

I've gotten to the end of WetWorks a handfull of times, and keep losing it from some mysterious dude in the smoke. Very frustrating. Agreed on these crack shot baddies on Veteran. Those Juggernauts hip firing Heavies and killing me with 2 shots from 50 yards just pisses me off soooo much. I also love those there are regular guys on Veteran who are easily 100yards away who are able to see me through bushes and trees and just peck me off.

There are game types for that. I know I played standard playtypes (that gave XP) in CoD4 that were one death rounds, i'd assume that MW2 has them too. The problem is that unless you're playing with a core group, you often end up watching way too many people 'go solo' and that just ends the round in frustration because there was no team work.

Yep, my point exactly. There's no teamwork, so I don't play much multiplayer anymore. Not even sure I'm going to renew my Xbox live account when it expires in February.

I'm considering picking up this game. i'm new to the mw series so i'm not sure. I've heard that infinityward dumbed down the game to make it more casual and easy to pick up and play for beginneres. (typical in console games this gen)
I found out you can't outfit with different camo so that was a big disapointment. can you blow doors down with explosives? shoot down doors? blow holes in walls?
I haven't played so i can't say but so far rainbow six is the tactical stealth top dog imo.

That'd be "Search and Destroy" I believe. That's not straight deathmatch though, you have to either defuse or defend a bomb, depending on what side you're on. And yeah, you do to tend to watch a majority of the match it seems. It does encourage a more careful gameplay since you only get one life per round though.

I wouldn't say they dumbed down the experience any from COD 4, they just added a bunch of superfluous stuff like callsigns, emblems, and all of the heads-up stuff (think "HEADSHOT!"). It doesn't change the gameplay any, it just makes it feel more arcade-y in my opinion.
If you want stealth then there's not a whole lot here for you. You can play a sneaky class in multiplayer but you'll have to get pretty good before you start to enjoy yourself, and it's not even a viable option on a lot of the maps.
I consider MW2 to be a nice mix of Halo and R6. Thinking will get you a leg up, and teamwork will help a lot, but you'll still need to rely on some twitch gunplay.

well just finished the single player on hardened. I gotta say this game impressed! while this is my first cod purchase. I am in love. the game was pure fun, beautiful, very cinematic and really cool a.i. love the grenade physics! oh and the particle effects are the best i've seen! ;) the game is full of plot twist and turns. the stealth missions were a ball too. I'm a big rainbow six fan so i was in love there. one part in the snow forest i kept getting spotted and i was thinking it was scripted in but i hid better and the trucks just passed by. sweeeeeeet. also the repelling was cool.
the multi player is really cool too. at first i was like wtf this is way to fast for my style..... but when your team uses team work it's really fun. if you play matches with small teams like on sabotage it can get quite tactical. i still have some ranking up to do to unlock most of the game modes.
my biggest complaint is that in multiplayer you change and load way too fast. seems too arcadey. is there a mode to slow down reloading and mag change?
anyway if you like slow paced, small team-teamwork driven tactical style matches with 0 respawns or limited my psn id is "narcronomus" id you want to add me. :)

This is truth. I'd have to say Spec Ops is by far the most enjoyable for me out of all the modes accessible in MW2. Unfortunately, I'm in the same situation as you, with only one more Veteran mission to finish that is absolutely impossible.
Why not? Thanks
You're still using that avatar, nice! :)
