well finally have my japanese sms set up as well as my tototek flash cart and adaptor.
to make a long story short my goal was to play phantasy star in english with the fm sound. after loading the game + fan translation on the flash cart and going to play i switch over to the FM synth i get silence.
i know the machine is good because it plays other jp carts with fm fine and the roms with fm (the jp version of PS) for example play fine. i've checked the patched rom in an emulator and it worked fine with toggeling between option on the title screen.
yes, i'm aware i can just play it on a pc, thats not the point.
now i've had a few people inform me that the problem may acually be with the tototek adaptor but as of yet i can't seem to find any alternative adaptors out there for playing US sms games on a JP system. can anyone reccommend a diffrent adaptor and point me to where to purchase it?

Why hasnt there been an english hack of the mega drive version of phantasy star? that would seem easier

Because there is no Mega Drive version of Phantasy Star, the Mega Drive cart is just the Master System game with an adapter.

really?
so there is an adapter inside the cart similar to the famicom>NES adapter found inside early NES carts? can it be removed from the cart and used with other japanese master system games?

I don't think it's a physical adapter in the Gyromite sense... the cartridge is probably just wired up to throw the Genesis into SMS mode.

I wonder if someone could hack all the Sonic's on the SMS on a Single MD/Gen Cart and get it in SMS mode

Would there be much point since an official adapter is available?

Back on topic, this is the adapter I use:

I've never used the tototek one but this one lets me have US and PAL/JP carts plugged in at the same time. (it defaults to the primary cart slot if theres a cart in it).
I don't know if it will solve your Phantasy Star problem but there you go.

the last post on that thread was 2008. hope he still sells them.
i didn't know there was a second cart slot on the back of the sms. why? why does he reccommend useing this port with the diagonal adaptor?

He does still sell them. I got mine this year from Adol. I got the recommended squiggly variety. It works great with Power Strike II.

So the front slot remains open for regular JPN SMS games. There is less wear and tear on the system's cartridge contacts if you keep the adapter plugged into the back port all the time instead of swapping it out all the time.

Yeah, definitely get that adapter. A Jap SMS with that adapter has been my primary setup now for over a year and it's done me through dozens of games already. It's great to have that FM capability, although it's sad that the text heavy games like Phantasy Star did not bring the FM sound over to western carts because of the added space the English characters occupy in the dialogue.
