Pre-orders for the long awaited RPG "Mysterious Song" for the Turbo Grafx 16 Super CD are finally open! This is a full game complete with old skool, hand drawn cinematic sequences and voice acting [that doesn't suck!]. Slated for a March 1st, 2010 release. Hey man, don't talk crap about Insanity. It's actually quite a good game, and impressive considering it was done pretty much by one person, and still took a year. Shovelware.. hahahaahaha

Not only that, but he basically had to figure out how to program for the TG16 from the ground up since there is really no documentation available for it. The music he had to build his own software just to make music for it, it's not something you can whip together with a tracker.

Game looks great! Can't wait to see what the final product will look like.

Insanity is a really cool game, definitely just as much worth looking into as this, unless you simply don't like Berzerk. As Oldskool pointed out, Insanity did something HUGE in the TG16 indie scene by creating a quality PSG player. If you've ever checked out the old sound demos people made before, you'd know a few bleeps and bloops was about all there really was :D .

I would also like to take this opportunity to hint that there is quite a few hidden extras within Mysterious Song, one of them including a nifty, polished little game :) .

oh I understand it being a milestone, and i'm VERY exstatic to see the tg16 getting some love, but judging it as a game on the system it looked very subpar compared to the rest of the lineup (i watched some of the videos that were posted awile back) it reminded me alot of those 8 billion in 1 cds you'd get for the pc with slight varients of popular games, perhaps i'm not giving it a fair shake, but wasn't impressed from what I saw.

i'm open to giving it another shot since everyone seems to be giving it praise, perhaps I judged a book by its cover?\

You can download a demo for it on the Insanity page (http://www.aetherbyte.com/insanity.htm) to try it out. The music and sound effects are really cool and the controls are ace. Plus it has a boss fight at the end and some really neat hidden extra variations of the game :) . Compared to the previous two homebrew Turbo games by MindRec, it's a big leap of improvement.

I can certainly understand how you feel! The basic game for Mysterious Song has basically been complete for years, we're just in the process of adding the very last things and tuning it all up. We're aiming to have the final version ready by the end of the year and have the pressing order made in January. Beta testing has been going very smoothly so far with smaller bugs becoming difficult to find.

Mysterious Song works flawlessly in most emulators, with the exception of a very slight sprite overlay glitch in Magic Engine (which I've been testing it most with). Of course I'd always recommend buying a Turbo system just for all the other awesome games on it :D .

Thanks so much for the pre-orders! Depending on who we go for pressing, it's going to cost somewhere between $1,200-1,700, so every sale helps a lot!

No you won't be charged $35 dollars twice. When the game is pressed and ready to ship, you'll simply be charged just the shipping amount, so just a few bucks depending on where you live.

My preorder will be in later tonight/tomorrow :-D. Good to see the years of hardwork finally coming to completion. When the project started I was a freshman in high school! or something around that.

Soon , PCE homebrew will be the king of all retro-stuff.

:o

Jee-whiz, thank you for blatantly insulting my hard work without ever actually trying the game out. Classy. That was a very rude and completely unnecessary comment. Giving props to homebrew by slamming other homebrew? c'mon. :frustrated:

A lot of work went into producing a usable and effective means to play PSG music. It's the first of it's kind. Even more work went into optimizing the game code to work well on a barely documented machine.

Being the first professionally pressed PCE CD game since 2001, complete with CD/PSG music, sampled SFX, and a few hidden features, I think calling it shovelware is :bullshit:.

What do you want for a Berzerk remake anyway? Judging ANY game by its cover (and btw, the cover for the game looks kick ass: see website), is uncool.

Homebrew needs support, not uninformed insults based off of ONE video that was posted before the game even had SFX put in.

and now, back on topic time. :wink 2:

It seems there are issues going on with this games release. If you have pre-ordered and not been able to find info about its release, the game has been delayed to the realms of limbo until major issues are sorted out. If you are awaiting a refund, or have tried to get one, chances are you will not be issued one, according to the lead programmer. Their website account has evidently been suspended too as of today I was told, but may be back up soon if the lead programmer can get a hold of a credit card. http://www.frozenutopia.com/cgi-sys/suspendedpage.cgi

Part of post from lead programmer The Old Rover in regards to refunds:

We're having a problem with PayPal still. They have been refusing to hear the case, so I have been forced to hire an attorney to get them to wise up and fix the issue we currently have with them. As it stands right now, all of the money is locked up in PayPal's system and they refuse to release it, so I cannot fulfill refunds, take new orders, or even afford the pressing at the moment. Until they release the funds, our hands are tied on this matter. Of course, I'm sure a certain someone in the clique will have a grand time with this one. And to that person, I offer my middle finger, raised in salute.

More info regarding this can be found here on this thread:

Thanks for updating everyone, Mike.

There is some good information for people to read in the PCEFX link that PC-ENGINE HELL posted, but beware of an obsessive amount of mud slinging.

To sum everything up here:

Mysterious Song is still in the final stages of development and we're trying the best we can to get it out as soon as possible. Major life problems behind the programmer and cinematic artists prevented the game from being released in our previously expected time frame. The cinematic art is almost complete now and the earlier sequences are being programmed with the extras to be followed. The final rounds of beta testing will be required before sending the game to the pressing plant.

Nodtveidt / The Old Rover, the leader and programmer of Frozen Utopia, has been having problems with Pay Pal and has hired a lawyer to investigate it. He has said that he is currently unable to pay any refunds via Pay Pal but may be able to work out other options if necessary. To help compensate, he will deduct shipping costs from all those who pre-ordered MSR by the time it's released and will also likely up the bonus item to the first 100 orders. Further pre-orders can not be taken at this time.

Neither. Mega Man 37 will be developed for Pc-Engine Super Cd-Rom by Grin (newly reformed), and will guest star Super Joe battling along side Mega Man(a freshly out of the grave and resurrected Steve Blum will reprise the voice role). It will be released around 2142, at least 300 years before Mysterious Song and Pier Solar are released. All fans who pre-order now are guaranteed one free resurrection pass so they can come back from the dead to play the game. Pre-order cost is cheaper then that Final Fight barrel press kit thing. ;)

The website says it is a remake of that game, so it's not a coincidence. I've been wondering too what the bonus is, but I haven't been able to find any clues. Though, they were saying they were limiting that to the first 25 or 30 or maybe more so I have no idea if any new orders would get the item, but it would be awesome if they did.

There are screen shots released, and I've talked with people who are playing the current build right now for QC and testing. I believe one reason it's taking so long is that because since it's a pressed disc he wants to make sure that all bugs and issues are addressed, since once it's sent to manufacture there it no chance to do a recall without a huge monetary hit.

jb143

There is a saying in indie game development that goes something along the lines of "the last 10% is 90% of the work". In other words, you can be almost done and still have a lot to do. I seriously doubt this is a scam. My guess is that they simply didn't estimate how much work and time it took to actually finish making a game like this. "Finish" as in taking an almost complete game and getting it shipped out the door.

This. Speaking from first hand experience with all the trouble we had during Pier Solar's development I'd say it's worth the risk and just be patient with the development process. If you're really concerned with what is going to happen to your cash, wait until it's closer to the release date.

Also, and I'm repeating something I said often during PS's development, it's really difficult to estimate ETA for an indie project. In a real development environment you always have 40 hours per week per employee and a general idea of how long a particular task is going to take. Once you do the math you can estimate how many man hours it's going to take. Not so on an indie project. One week you might have 20 hours of free time and the next week you might have three. It's really difficult to plan a development schedule around that kind of fluctuation.

Speaking of Pier Solar, seeing as I don't have a Genesis laying around, does it work on clones? I'm waiting for another production run, would be cool to know if I can run this on a clone or if I'll need to dig up a Genesis

Yes, it'll be a pressed CD, that's why development and testing is such a big deal before release.

this thread started long ago.

Is this thing safe to order or what?

It is safe to preorder; in fact, today I contacted David Perry (owner of Frozen Utopia) and his wife Elsie through the Boricua Goodies site, and they confirmed it. Boricua Goodies is a export and shipping company that specializes in exporting mostly Puerto Rican Rican products to the Continental U.S and other countries.

They live pretty close to my house, about a 40 minutes drive, I got an invitation from them and it is quite possibly that I will do the travel and see the game in its final stages before going gold. ;)
