Me and a couple of friends just had a fun night competing in various nintendo retro games. We decided to have 10 games in our little tournament, so I looked through my collection and found these that we played: Killer instinct, Super mario kart, Ice hockey, Super mario bros (run through the first course the fastest), Mortal kombat II, Super Bomberman II, Super Tennis, F-Zero (fastest lap time on a course), ISS and Street Fighter II Turbo.
So we are planning to do this again soon and I was wondering if anyone had any tips on fun games that would fit an event like this? It could also be a fun challenge in a game like for example; clear the first stage of Contra III with as many lifes left as possible or something like that.

Ms. Pacman (Tengen version) for the NES is a great 2-player game. It has so many options. You can work with each other or you can screw the other guy by bumping into him and sending him across the board.
Try RC ProAm 1&2 or Micro Machines. Great games for NES. RCProm 2 is a four player game!
Also Micro Machines is on SNES and give "RocknRoll Racing" or "Biker Mice from Mars" a shot!

Don't know if you want any more fighters, but TMNT: Tournament Fighters is probably a good pick there.
You seem to be lacking Puzzle games. Perhaps you should look for Tetris Attack or Kirby's Avalanche?
(As for SMB, Super Mario All-Stars has an actual "Mario Bros." 2-player competitive mode in the SMB3 game.)
Maybe you could also unlock Mega Man 7's secret "Vs" Mode.

Tetris Attack and Uniracers both deserve additional mentions; sports games where players can go head-to-head could also be a lot of fun for something like this.
You could always try to speedrun through shorter games (i.e. beat Super Mario Bros. 3 the fastest).
