View Full Version : Anyone collect for the original Magnavox Odyssey?
A guy I know over at AtariAge is about to release a homebrew.
Here's the link. (http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/153337-project-odball/)
I thought I would share this here and at the other forums I visit in case anyone was interested. This is the 35th anniversary of Odyssey, and by extension, the 35th anniversary of home video games!

Ooo.... Very cool! I have an Odyssey, but no games. Very, very tempting...
I like the fact that he used card #11, nice to see it finally being "officially released!"
Having a complete Magnavox collection I must get this for sure:

I don't see a shipping box for the console, or for Percepts. :D
Very nice. The 1973 games are just insanely rare these days.
Just an update, that guy over at AtariAge is taking orders for the homebrew and has a bunch of pics of the finished product.

I need those 73 games myself. Unfortunately people try to make WAY too much money from them. I also dont see their shipping box or the one for the 72 games ha ha. But a very nice collection indeed.
Also you need the Apex-magnavox Blue card. Also hard to find. I myself am obseesed with this system. Collecting everything from service manuals to advertisements. All im missing is the 73 games. I Even have soccer
I decided that I don't need shipping boxes, so I don't collect them.
The double-card would be nice, but I got both games (Handball, Volleyball), so it's not a must have.
I do have the Fussball overlay, and extra cards 3 and 5, plus a scoreboard.
(Anyone can email that Odball guy for me, as I lost his email? Thanks)

But if he makes more, then my copy becomes more common, oh noes!
But seriously, it's a neat game to have, both just for being a homebrew on the Odyssey, and for using card #11.

forgive me for being ignorant, but i was under the impression that the odyssey contained all the games it could ever play, that the 'game cards' were really just jumpers that selected different games hardwired into the mainboard. how does this work?

Basically all the odyssey games are just instructions that use game peices. The game carts produce something on the screen and different games use the different features. Take Hand ball. It uses cartridge 8, which makes it so the wall can move all the way left and that the ball will bounce off it instead of going through. There fore if i made up a game that worked like that all id have to make is instructions and peices to use. Then use that cartridge. Its actually really simple.
Game number 11 was planned for the game basketball. Its basically the same as the one for handball but the rest button makes the ball disapear. They decided not to use it at magnavox and thus cancelled the making of the game cart. Rev Rob has just made the cartridge and instructions and peices to use with it. It would be very simple to make more odyssey homebrews that used the 6 that came with the odyssey. Take fun zoo. it was made to use cartridge 2 which is packed with the system. So all it came with was overlays ands cards and instructions. Not reason someone couldnt make say a monopoly game. Include an overlay cards and instructions.
But to simply answer yor quesiton the odyssey only has one built in game. The cartridges just mildly alter that one games program in order to make new things happen. Theoretically one could make more game carts that did more things but it would take an immense amount of testing to get it right.
