I'm looking for a new Japanese Saturn shooter. Price range would be around $50. Good things have been said about Salamander, any ideas?

Get the Salamander Deluxe Pack and the Gradius Deluxe Pack, Detana Twinbee Deluxe Pack, and all the Parodius games on the Saturn, you can't go wrong at all with these. Also look for Konami MSX Antiques (I bought one from DaveB here awhile back, no regrets on it at all), has the MSX versions of Salamander, as well as 3 different Gradius titles, the last two unique. And they should all be under 50 bucks a piece.

Soukyugurentai. It's my favorite Saturn shooter and should be able to be had for $30-40.
I've got a Detana Twinbee Deluxe Pack I can sell to you for $25 shipped if you are interested...

I see someone already mentioned Souky, which is the hardcore answer. As for something enjoyable, but a bit more about flash than substance, I wholeheartedly recommend Macross Do You Remember Love?. It's not a perfect game by any means, but that doesn't mean it can't be awesome. 2 discs of shooting and cinemas based on a classic anime. Fantastic.
I am going to say Battle Garegga. I think you should be able to find it for about $50...
Although you can't go wrong with the others mentioned in this thread too.

I second Battle Garegga if you can get it that cheap.
Kingdom Grand Prix is way unknown and vastly underrated. It a great shooter with some racing elements thrown in. Should be cheap.

The only answer is Sengoku Blade. Nothing is better than a little asian dude flying through the air who shouts kanji letters at their enemies causing them to explode. Really damn fun shooter and great to play with a friend. The characters can also charge their attacks to summon an animal to attack enemies. There's a phoenix that burns things, as well as a gopher or beaver or something that breaths flames like a dragon. It's pretty epic. Weird and really funny game, and it adds level as you increase the difficulty.

You want a new Saturn shooter, but what do you have already? I've got the Salamander package, which is a port of the arcade version, and I must say I never play it. (I still prefer Life Force/Salamander on the NES/Famicom.) My favorite Saturn shooters are DoDonPachi, Batsugun, Gunbird, Sengoku Blade, Kingdom Grandprix and I'm about to get Strikers 1945 II.

Not being into shmups at all, I'm going to recommend the two Cotton titles and Sol Divide. I just like the art style of these games.

I can't get but one or two, since you seconded Salamander I think I'll get that one. I'll have to check out Konami Antiques MSX since I already have that one.

I've also heard good things about Kingdom Grand Prix. Looks like it will be Salamander Deluxe and KGP.

I'll have to check out Soukyugurentai later, two people mentioned it. I already have a game I have listed as:
T-9505G - Detana Twinbee Yahho ! Deluxe Pack - C
which is probably the same game you have for sale.

Macross sounds cool, I'll have to check it out later.

I will also check this one out later. BTW I sent out your New Horizons case a couple days ago, you should get it today or tomorrow.

That is a really cool set of vids, it will help a lot. Looks like a -1 for Salamander and another +1 for Sengoku Blade, I'll have to look deeper in to these two. I've also heard DoDonPachi and Batsugun are worth checking out. I have Gunbird 1 and 2 on Dreamcast and wasn't blown away by them.
I don't know for sure which Japanese games I have are shooters. They can be hard to tell and I have about 350 Japanese Saturn games. For sure I have Detana Twinbee Yahho! Deluxe Pack (or whatever it's called), Konami MSX Antiques if you count that, Capcom Generations 1 - 5 of which some are shooters, Thunder Force V, that's about all I can recognize.
I really like Galactic Attack for Saturn and Fire Shark for Genesis. Layer Section II is high on my list of cheaper shooters to get.

Also, you can always try most of these out in MAME to decide which one to get.

I actually have a Salamander Deluxe Pack I wouldn't mind selling.
Another choice to think about is Guardian Force - a bit strange looking but it has a great scoring system. Play as a tank with a turret that rotates eight ways! It's not insanely expensive either.

I ended up going with Kingdom Grand Prix. I was going to get two but with Christmas coming up and presents to buy I could only get one. I should have it soon, it's coming from Japan.

It looks like I do have this one! Actually I have two versions of it. I didn't realize it because I have it listed in my game list as:
T-23403G - Choujikuu Yousei Macross ~Ai Oboete Imasu ka~ (Fat case) - C
and
T-23403G - Choujikuu Yousei Macross ~Ai Oboete Imasu ka~ (Slim case) - C
I was talking with my girlfriend, asking her about Japanese words from my Japanese Saturn game list (she's from Okinawa). As soon as I saw "Macross" and "Ai" (which I knew was love) something clicked. That one will be getting pulled out and played immediately.

I'll have to check Guardian Force out. How much do you want for Salamander Deluxe?
