I've played a few arcade racers now and then, but I've never played one that made me look seriously at gear ratios. It's making other racers look seriously deficient. So far, all I've done is buy the cheapest two used Mazda sedans, and then I got the newer Ford Mustang available and have put a lot of money into it. Pretty fun. I'm still working on the gear ratios for balancing quick acceleration at the low end with a high top speed.

Of all the Gran Turismo games, GT2 is the one I've spent the biggest chunk of time with. I haven't played in a long time, but I know I've completed over 80% of the game, and I have a pretty huge garage. My first car was a used Honda Civic 4-door. My favorite cars in the game are the Ford GT40 race car and the Unisia Jecs Skyline GT. Playing an endurance race with the TV on mute and an album playing in my stereo = good times.

I'm pretty sure I've done everything there is to do in the first Gran Turismo. That game blew me away! Just the fact that they included a reference manual on driving (which I read cover to cover, btw) shows how much attention-to-detail was paid in this series. Didn't really like GT2, but I GT3 was quite a step up in terms of graphics and sound, so while I haven't finished it yet, I still love it. I got gold trophies on more than half of the license tests, and will go back and finish someday...

As far as I can remember where Gran Turismo 1 & 2 are concerned, once you can get a Mitsubishi GT3000 fully kitted out, you're invincible. I think its HP once fully upgraded was near or over 1000.

Yeah, you can eventually get to a point where you can play it that way, but it takes a fair amount of work just to get there. Not to mention, it won't work in every race (many cups have restrictions). Also, the way I play the game, it's about challenging yourself with certain cars, trying to master how they handle, and getting the most out of your driving and not the upgrades.

Looking through the garages, there's a few 2M Cr cars, one's a Pikes Peak racer with dual engines at 788 HP - just starting out, no idea if it can be tuned yet. Good times.

I went ahead and got the GT3000. The Evo would've been a better choice if it had a comparable top HP rating, but it really can't compete.
