Does anyone else think that Raiden on the Jaguar is a little too difficult? There are way more enemies on the screen sometimes than you could possibly shoot! Is the arcade version like that?

I don't remember it being significantly different from the arcade version, but the controller made it difficult for me to play. Are there any good alternatives to the standard jag controller?

Man, Raiden was never an easy game. I can get to stage 3 on one credit if I'm lucky. (Arcade version) If you're serious about playing Raiden, I'd suggest the PSX version in tate mode, that way you have the orientation the designers intended with a much wider range of controller options.

I personally find the Jag version of Raiden to be one of the more playable versions in terms of difficulty. The PSX one is closer to the arcade in all ways, including difficulty; though if I remember correctly, the easiest mode is easier than the Jag version.
Euro-trash border notwithstanding, It is a pretty faithful conversion. If the PSX version didn't exist, it would have been tied with the TurboGrafx version for best home port of the original Raiden released in the US imho. I am quite fond of the Jag version of Raiden, and it is one of my most-played Jaguar games. Of course, that it because it is really the only forced-scrolling shmup for the system outside of the dreadful Trevor McFur.

I've never played the Jag version but Raiden IV for the 360 is one of the hardest games I've ever played. I can't even beat it without continuing on very easy. Then there's easy, normal, hard, very hard and ultimate.

Raiden Trad on the SNES isn't too bad, sure you get only one continue in single player mode and none at all in two player simultaneous, but at least it has the two player mode (the Genesis and TG16 versions don't), and the game is easy enough that it's beatable with only one continue. I got the game last year, didn't take that long to beat and I'm not amazing at shmups... I definitely want The Raiden Project for PSX (particularly for the only home port of the second game), though. The SNES game definitely requires plenty of memorization, but once you do that it's really not that bad... there are a couple of tough bosses, but for the most part it's much easier than the arcade version of the game, I think. Still lots of fun though!

Raiden is also one of my favorite Jag games. The difficulty isn't too bad, especially with the 8 credit option. I can usually make it through the first couple levels with 1 credit, but the boss battles in the later stages are a bit beyond my skill level. Right now, I can make it through the game on 6 credits. Maybe someday I'll be able to do it in 1 or 2.

Raiden, as a whole, is a moderately difficult shmup (bullet hell shmups not withstanding). The Jag version is a little easier than the Arcade version, but is made difficult with the standard Jag controller's size (haven't tried with a Pro controller).
Memorization and utilization of power-ups is key - once you've figured out what you need for each boss and section, it becomes infinitely easier. It also helps to toss on the extra credits :)

Oh, and though I am sure you noticed... the weapon power-up changes color from blue to red. If you start collecting red, don't grab a blue one or your weapon will change to the lasers, and be at level 1 again. Your weapon can go up to Level 8. The if you keep leveling up the red weapon eventually it will have a spread as wide as the screen, and really eliminate the dodging.
If you already knew this, please disregard ;)

If you think the Jaguar version is hard try the Turbografx-16. No 2 player option and you get taken way back to a checkpoint after you die.
