Donkey Kong Country 3 - Heads Up

If the save battery on your copy of DKC3 for SNES has died, here is a warning. You cannot get to the last two levels of the game (Rocket Rush & Knautilus) without using the WATER cheat that gives you all the Bonus coins at once.

What happens is that after the credits roll and you return to the file select screen, the file is completely gone, even if you never turned off the system! Now that's what I call unusual.

I just played a perfect game, ready to finish it off and then this junk happens. Looks like I'll have to cheat and do another quick playthrough in order to record those levels for my video as well as the funny alternate ending. Oh well.

If only I had a Game Bit to open the cartridge and replace the battery with one from a sports game...

I guess that is a word of warning, if your battery is not working, your SRAM can't store anything, even if you don't restart your game!

Yeah I think the only reson it affects DKC3 is that you have to go back to the file select screen to continue on.

This must mean the same thing would probably happen to DKC2 if its battery messed up because in that game you also have to fight the final boss and roll the credits before going back and finishing the last two secret levels.

I can't think of any other games that do this at the end of the game.

Perhaps in Chrono Trigger if your battery died you could leave your SNES on all week until you beat the game, but you probably wouldn't be able to go back and play the + game and get extra endings.
