Colecovision driving module...help!!!!

I've just tried out my CV driving module....no steering

I tried new batteries, and had a look at the manual on the net, and it just says erratic or no steering is down to flat batteries.

Any ideas anyone.....could it be that the battery contacts need cleaning?
