So what about this failed for you? Did you go into the trade not knowing that most of the titles are sports games or something? Or did you give away the DS, or did you receive it? DETAILS! A LIST IS NOT A STORY!

basically i found an ad on craigslist offering 33 games for 40 bucks, none of the games were listed and he didnt tell me what they were, i didnt have 40 bucks so i offered him my DS lite complete in box i figured there would be better games in there. but i got ripped off, but it brings my nes game count to 75 not including duplicates.

Well you could've ask for picture before trading.

Typically if you do any trade, you would ask the seller to post their list of game and get a picture to see if the stuff he/she is selling are legit. If seller will not willing to do both, then I would not trade it. Since you did neither, you risked it and didn't get what you want.

11-21-2009, 11:53 PM
If you didn't like the games, why would you trade? I mean, you had to pick them up, didn't you? Why would you trade your DS without knowing what you were getting? Are you trying to gain sympathy, because I am far from sympathetic in this situation.

Gameguy
11-22-2009, 12:07 AM
If he was asking for $40 for the lot, why would you offer him your DS Lite? You seriously didn't have $40 available to buy the lot? If the seller won't tell you what the games are, it's for a reason. $40 is pretty decent for that, it's not worth a DS Lite though.

One person locally on craigslist was selling Genesis games for a good price but didn't list the games or have a photo, and he refused to tell me what they were. I told him I wouldn't buy anything unless I knew what I was getting, I never heard back but I didn't care. I wouldn't get something unless I knew or at least had an idea what I would be getting.

11-22-2009, 12:26 AM
Wow that really was a crappy deal, but I guess it's what you had coming since you didn't ask what games were involved.

Aussie2B
11-22-2009, 12:45 AM
You should've told him he'd get a mystery handheld for his mystery games. Maybe it would be a boxed DS Lite or maybe it would be a scratched up Game Boy or Game Gear. :P

11-22-2009, 02:42 AM
...?!?!?

A couple of things:

1) Is a DS Lite only worth 40 bucks?!?
2) You didn't ask for a list of games?!?
3) You didn't ask for a picture of the games?!?
4) You didn't ask to look at the games before handing your DS over?!?
5) You didn't ask to look at the games before handing your DS over?!?
6) You didn't ask to look at the games before handing your DS over?!?
7) I'm sorry. I realize 4, 5 and 6 are just the same question but, you didn't bother to look at the games before handing your DS over?!?

Gamble is the correct word. Trade, not so much. Did you just stick your DS Lite on a table and he handed you a box with a giant question mark on it?

InsaneDavid
11-22-2009, 02:43 AM
Was there gun play involved at the time of pickup or something?

Fuyukaze
11-22-2009, 04:29 AM
When you made the trade did he suddenly offer you $50 for what was in the box before you could open it? Maybe $60? did he offer you $70 for the box? I dont know about you but I think you got zonked.

Also, did he look like Wayne Brady?

Icarus Moonsight

You screwed yourself. It wasn't a gamble. When you gamble you pretty much know what you stand to win, and if savvy, also your chance of winning. Someone won... Too bad it wasn't you. Learn to say no.

I'm not perfect, but I don't think I would have made that mistake. "Gamble" is right. I bet you learned a lesson from it though. lol.

I know someone else already asked these, but this bears some repeating:

1. Since when is a DS Lite worth $40?
2. Why wouldn't you ask for a picture of the games, or at least a list?
3. Did he have the games in a box when you showed up and tell you not to open them?

Seriously...the third question's really on my mind. When you saw the games, why didn't you just LEAVE? It's a damn Craiglist deal, not a binding contract. All you needed to say is "sorry, changed my mind," and then go on your merry way.

It boggles my mind that you chose to trade even after you (presumably) saw the games.

1. since i can only have traded it in for 30
2. i did and he told me he was selling the entire lot not the games seperately because of that i figured there would be some good games in there.
3. we met outside a Wawa and when we exchanged he got out of there very quickly it was also dark out.

...you could have asked to look at the games before handing him the DS Lite. If he tried to bail, then you don't make the trade. Again, you were under NO obligation to do this. You were the one making the transaction, you had every right to look at the games before handing him your stuff.

Also, that sounds like a drug deal, not a video game trade.

I met a guy outside a Walgreens at night for a Craiglist trade. And he had to stand there while I opened every case and inspected the games. In the end I said no deal and walked away.

You had the upper hand in the deal, there's no reason the guy couldn't have waited on you.

Trade in amounts at GameStop aren't a reflection of the value of the item. Take a look at what they sell used DS Lites for and you'll find it's $79.99. They give you a fraction of what the item is worth so they can resell it for a significant profit. They're worth far more than $40.

The guy got a great deal...

Why he didn't look in the damn box is beyond me.

Maybe it was listed as a "mystery package" - Aussie2B's post suggests this - in which case I would say this is almost a case of being righteously served for greediness, but then you would've just traded some crap beat-up old handheld.

The lesson here is you ought to assume it's crap unless your eyes tell you otherwise, and be like Scrooge: "I don't ship until I have the cash in hand."

Your mistake wasn't using craigslist, it was trading it for a mystery box of games.

Where is this stone written rule that your only option was to trade in the DS to Gamespot for $30.00. There are a multitude of sites with buy/sell forums, including here on DP, and of course online marketplaces like ebay.

There is no way that is $40 worth of games. I honestly would not pay $10 for that lot of shitty sports games, even if a few NES games came with 50 cents worth of manuals. On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being a horrible trade and 10 being a great trade this has to be a 1.5. It could only be worse if you would have recieved a litteral box of shit in return. The lesson in this, as others have pointed out, is it is alright to say no.

Anyway, lesson learned I would imagine, so don't stress on it. What is done is done.

Gameguy
11-23-2009, 12:01 AM
If the lesson you've learned from this is "Never get anything from Craigslist", then you've learned the wrong lesson.
That reminds me of an episode of Kung Fu, as kids from the temple Caine and another kid are cheated by some stranger while walking around somewhere. They're later asked what lessons they learned from the experience. The other kid said he learned not to trust any strangers. He was asked to leave the temple for good. I want to watch more episodes of that show now, it was really good and it's been awhile since I've seen any episodes.

That lot was worth $40 for the NES games, not by much though. I wouldn't have bought that lot for $40 because I don't need any of those games but it wasn't a ripoff for $40. I just want to know how old the OP is if he didn't have $40 for this, plus how many adult collectors would just trade stuff into Gamestop rather than sell it themselves. Golgo 13 is pretty good though.

XYXZYZ
11-23-2009, 12:12 AM
This reminds me of buying Double Dragon III for $40.00 when it came out, without renting it first.(I loved the first two!) I still feel the pain today... A kid like me having $40 back then was a once in a blue moon event.

Don't be yet another drop-out from the school of hard-knocks. It's wasn't Craigslist... You did it! You know this, deep down, otherwise you wouldn't have posted like this...

People that get burned still cook their food. If you avoid craigslist, then you missed anything of worth you could have got from this instance.

OP definately has to be a minor. I really can't see any adult looking at this situation and thinking it was any type of a good deal. Most notably is the fact that you seemed so worried about being out late at night and the inblilty to tell someone no.

Hopefully next time you take the trade slow, don't do a deal late at night and find out for sure what your getting before you commit.

Before you give something out from your hands, you have the right to ask as many questions as it takes for you to be satisfied with the trade. Who cares if asking him 700 questions will piss him off, you worked hard to pay for the DS, you shouldn't just give it out and hope for the best. that is just sloppy trading.
