View Full Version : Has anyone kicked a game from their collection...

...because it locked up and wiped the save file out?

I'm about to dispose of a PS2 game on account of that... two savefiles in two weeks is a bit much, I'm just glad I only lost a couple of hours of time to it.

What game?

The only one I've had issues with is Midway Arcade Treasures 3. The Xbox and PS2 versions regularly corrupt their save files.

Had to purchase the GameCube release to play the games that benefit from saving (Was delayed and the problem was apparantly fixed during the delay). Now, I just use the Xbox release for playing some of the more classic titles on it that don't have any save functions beyond high scores (Super Off-Road, Badlands, etc.).

huh? Wouldn't the hardware (memory card) be at fault in that situation?

The game? Wipeout Fusion. It's the only one I've had the problem with, and given that I've played it on two different PS2s, and I have no other games giving me save corruption, I'm inclined to pin blame on the game.

Played that one a million times, never had a problem. Strange.

In this case, no... the game locked up just as it was about to save. I've had no problems with the memory card itself.

My Atari Karts cartridge for the Jaguar couldn't keep track of my completed levels for some reason. I still kept it, I just don't play it because I know there's no way I can ever advance in the game without it erasing the save files again.

I once kicked a clean hole into the front of my Super Nintendo when I was playing Street Fighter 2 Turbo. Otherwise, I've only ever done extreme damage one other time, although for satisfaction rather than anger: I spiked my controller when I finally beat Bowser in Super Mario World.

While I've never had it wipe the save data, I have had Wipeout Fusion lockup many times, get stuck during the initial developer load sequences a number of times, and have all sound drop out a couple times as well. It's just a buggy game.

Speaking of bugs and Wipeout, in Wipeout 3 I figured out that if you used one specific type of craft, on one specific track, in the cockpit view, the game would freeze after completing the first lap. It would happen every single time. I can't recall the conditions (I noticed it right after the game was released) but honestly I would have rather been playing Wipeout XL anyway.

No, but I kicked your mom out when she got all prudish on me.

Also I was convinced for years my Secret of Mana cart was screwed because it would die right after the Earth Shrine (or whichever had the little Gnome guy)

Then I cleaned it and it was all good.

Clean your CD.

Arc the Lad. I'd played thru the first game, got save, continued thru the second, got save, played monster alot, continued thru the third game and my save died. Well over 100 hours into one save and my mem card data was corupted. I traded the game for a bunch of import saturn games with someone here on DP years ago.

I hadn't noticed it be too terribly buggy, but I had experienced the 'drop through the track' problem enough times it was becoming a bit worrysome... and then got bit when it locked up after the first track of the first league. Not the first time I'd played that league, even on that system. It locked right at the point it would start saving data.

As for 3 and XL, I haven't encountered that bug in 3 yet (I hate cockpit view), but I think both of those games are in the position of being 'good enough for now' on account of what happened.

Back when FFVII came out I was using a "Mega Memory Card". Lost my save repeatedly with that damn thing. Even as far as making it to disc 3.

Sold the card, and now I only use official memory cards.

Plus I went back and beat FFVII a year or two after that, so I guess I've gotten used to replaying games from the start.

Yeah, I took Little Nemo off of my collection because it has burnt contacts. There's graphics problems I won't be able to fix without soldering.

Another game at issue is my copy of Final Fantasy V Advance. It corrupts whenever I try to save. No, it's not a pirate... it's just defective.

Not for that particular reason, but there have been several games I've gotten rid of for various other technical problems - offhand, I had a copy of RoboWarrior for the NES that wouldn't load its graphics properly, a copy of Dynamite Headdy for Genesis that wouldn't load at all, and a few PlayStation and PS2 games that were scratched beyond repair. I've since replaced all of them with functional copies though.

I do remember the time I accidentally saved over my main Final Fantasy VII game, which was up to Disc 3, with a game that was still on Disc 1 (for some reason I'd started a new game before beating it, and was playing the first and second games simultaneously - no idea why, but this was like 12 years ago now). I was pretty mad, but it was my own fault.

I haven't dropped anything from my collection; my loose Metal Storm for NES doesn't work (I have it NIB as well), although I'm always hopeful I can get it working.

In most of these instances: Why blame the game?!

Half of my Pokemon GBC (Gold, Silver, Crystal) games have dead save batteries and can't save anymore, but I still keep them around. All they need are new CR2032 batteries to be soldered in... and someone with soldering experience to do that (not me!)

Usually if I have a broken game, I'll keep it in my collection until either I can get it fixed or I get another working copy.

Ratchet and Clank deleted my save three times, and Secret of Mana once saved my main character's name with an endless line of A's trailing off, effectively corrupting it. Fortunately I wasn't particularly far in either.
