Hi there,

I'm in the late stages of developing a Component (YPbPr) video mod for the ColecoVision. The price will be $45 US each, including mailing to US or Canadian addresses. I don't frequent DP too much, but I thought some of you might be interested in this. If you are, either reply in this thread or send me a PM. Payment won't be required until the boards are ready to be shipped.

The mod will be sold as an assembled kit. the PCB will be populated by me. However, you or someone else will need to open the case, drill some holes in the back of the console, attach about 7 wires to the CV board, and modify the shielding around the CV board.

Hi there,

In case anyone is still interested, the pre-order reservation list will be open through the Thanksgiving weekend at least. I'll be building some extra units which will be available on a first-come first-served basis, although the caseless video test cartridge won't be free at that point.

i kinda want this but money is tight and i already have an s-video modded coleco so its hard for me to justify.

only margionally. and most people don't have monitors capble of RGB. its probibly more convient to use component which most tv's now days have.

Hi eastbayarb,

The ColecoVision video display processor outputs something fairly close to YPbPr/component, so that is a natural output to choose. The signals could be transformed to RGB, but there would be no improvement to the signal by doing so.

By the way, the PCB layout for the mod is complete and has been verified, so I'll be ordering the boards first thing Monday morning. That's the pre-order deadline.

Pure RGB is better quality than Component Video, especially if you have an RGB capable (15khz) monitor. Most people think that component video and pure RGB is the same, but component video is a compressed version of it.

If your board could output pure RGB, I will take one of these. I don't suppose you have one of the boards planned for intellivision or Atari systems?

If the source material was higher quality, then yes, I agree, that RGB would be better. However, in this case, the source is very close to being YPbPr/component, and conversion to RGB (or VGA, DVI, HDMI, or DP for that matter) would not in itself improve the quality of the picture. Sorry, you'll need your own converter at this point.

For the Atari 2600, I'd investigate Longhorn Engineering's S-Video mod. That seems to be the best available, and S-Video for Atari is a natural choice. For the Intellivision, I'm not sure the best solution.

Update: PCBs have been ordered.

I've ordered some extra PCBs, so if you'd like to order one in the future, feel free to send me a PM, and I'll see what I can do.

I'll keep posting updates as the PCBs come in, and get populated/tested.

This is pretty awesome, I'm pretty interested in picking one up, but I don't know when I'll have the funds to do so. I must say it looks like impressive work. Nice going man.
