bleedingpegasus sends word that the US Air Force will be grabbing up 2,200 new PlayStation 3 consoles for research into supercomputing. They already have a cluster made from 336 of the old-style (non-Slim) consoles, which they've used for a variety of purposes, including "processing multiple radar images into higher resolution composite images (known as synthetic aperture radar image formation), high-def video processing, and 'neuromorphic computing.'" That is why they didn't use 360s. Well that and the fact that they did want to send back a red-ringed console every day for the next three years.

I remember talking about this in one of my engineering classes when they did it with PS2's. Networking a bunch together so they all work together approaches the comuting power of a supercomputer for far less money.

Anyway, I don't see anything too crazy here...you're limited in how many GPUs you can SLI or CrossFire together, and other solutions are probably more expensive.

Well since Sony almost certainly sells the tech and components for a loss (hoping that you'll buy dozens of licsensed games and Blu-Rays), it's probably not such a bad way to pick up some cheap computing power.
