I've searched over nintendorepairshop.com for a gamebit for gameboy color and gameboy games but all i can find is a gamebit for the gameboy systems. Looking at the NES gaebit, they seem like they could be interchangeable.

Yeah, the NES/SNES gamebit will work fine.

if you want to do the job right and need the right tool then i would recommend buying a gamebit rather than making one out of a bic pen. on that note most gamebit that i have tried suck. they are either too fat to go in the hole, not long enough to reach the screw once in the hole, or the teeth in the inner lining are mis-formed and dont properly grab the screw. i have seen it all with gamebits and i like to preserve the quality of my gaming consoles and cartridges. therefore, i would recommend that you get the real thing if you want to open your gameboy system. These security bits open mostly anything under the sun and the prices are cheaper than anywhere including the ebay and amazon:

Gamebit 4.5 mm or 3.8 mm (http://www.newelectronx.com/proddetail.php?prod=gamebit)

Security Game Kit Set (http://www.newelectronx.com/proddetail.php?prod=security-screwdriver-bit-set-100)

Gameboy carts are pretty easy to get into since they aren't as deep as some other games or systems. I've found that a small pair of scissors works great. Now I use a homemade bit though. I just dremmeled away the part of a flathead bit that wasn't a "gamebit". Only took a few minutes to make and it works like a charm.

I hadn't seen anyone mention this, but Gameboy Advance games need a triwing screwdriver, just so you know.
