View Full Version : Turbografx Set! Oh. My. Gosh. No.

There's only one shop in the area that regularly carries classic games called Zone-1. The guy that owns the place prices stuff unrealistically high and unfair, unfortunately. Anyway, I stopped in about an hour ago and almost had a heart attack from what I saw!

-Turbografx system with the CD attachment and system HU-Card! (great condition, I might add)
-Controller and some sort of arcade-stick thing!
-All of the cords!
-Carrying case!
-Set of about 20-25 games that included Bonk's Adventure, Bonk's Revenge, and Splatterhouse. Everything comes with cases and manuals except Splatterhouse and a couple of others! (I can't remember the other titles, but I'm pretty sure Magical Chase wasn't there)

First came the realization that I actually found one of these, and never did I dream of finding one with the CD attachment. Next came the thought of the price. This guy wants $69 for loose Saturns, so I figured the price was going to be set at a firm $300 or higher.
I asked anyway, and boy was I wrong.

$99.99. Games included.

I asked again for confirmation, and that was it. Except, I did not have the cash. Luckily, my dad was with me and bought it all as a Christmas gift. When I get to have it next month, pictures will be up and a list of the games will be written!

So, would you have picked this set up for this much? I'm thinking you would. :D

1) I hate to think what kind of rip off price/trade this guy gave the poor person that brought that set in to the shop.
2) Congrats on the awesome awesome awesome find!
3) Any idea if the CD portion works? Sadly, they are prone to breakage and if it's one of the gears, impossible to fix.
4) Sounds like you got some nice games to go with it, and even if the cd part doesn't work, for a TG-16 and that many games, it's still an awesome price.

NICEEEEEEEE congrats on the sweet find. Even finding a TG (much less cd) in the wild is cool, but a nice amount of games.

According to them, the system does work and the CD portion powers on with the system. They didn't have any games for it though, just HU Cards. With the condition its in, I'd be surprised if it didn't work.

nice find. If you aren't already, watch ebay for a cheap cd game so you can test it out when you get it. We all want it to work and it'd be cool to confirm that it does. Maybe this game will go pretty cheap: http://cgi.ebay.com/The-Addams-Family-TurboGrafx-16-cd-complete_W0QQitemZ150390567260QQcmdZViewItemQQptZV ideo_Games_Games?hash=item2303f9f15c

also, pics please (when you actually get the unit).

Congratulations, you got a lot of great gaming ahead of you. :) I got my PC Engine Duo-RX with a small assortment of games as a Christmas present too, and it's still one my favorite presents I've gotten for Christmas.

Np, now all you gotta do is obtain a copy of Dracula X Rondo of Blood and enjoy the finest 2d platformer of the 16 bit era. Well technically it's an 8bit machine but hey....

How much should I expect to pay for a complete one now? I remember that it used to go for a lot.

Not to brag ( who am I kidding? ) but i found the same thing at a garage sale a few months back for $20.00

Proabably 100-150. Of course, there are other ways of obtaining it for play ;D.

$100 sounds about right. I'll have to try to get one soon.

Anyway, my dad left the set in the trunk of his car last night. It was getting really cold, but instead of going to get it out himself, he had me do it. @_@
I took this chance to write down the games and check out the accessories. The TurboStick is in great condition, but there aren't any regular controllers like I thought, although everything else is there. (all games have the cases and manuals unless noted)

-Order of The Griffon (missing the case)
-Military Madness
-Sidearms
-Double Dungeons
-World Class Baseball
-Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective (CD game!)
-Final Lap Twin
-China Warrior
-Sinistron
-Legendary Axe
-Legendary Axe 2
-Keith Courage
-Vigilante
-Bonk's Adventure
-Bonk's Revenge
-Alien Crush
-Sports TV Basketball
-Dungeon Explorer
-Ballistix
-Victory Run
-Jackie Chan's Action Kung-Fu
-Sports TV Football
-Splatterhouse (missing manual)

So, the final count comes to 23 games. One is a CD game, so that's cool. My estimate was off by two, but I got close! The system card was included too, but I have no idea what version it was.

That's it for now. Pics will be ready on Christmas.

Congrats IMO it was a no brainer at that price OP. I always wanted a Turbo CD (having a TG-16 since shortly after it came out in the US) but they were always so expensive. I ended up finally getting one this past summer when I lucked out and found a BIN on eBay that was just under $100 shipped that had about 25 HuCards much like yours.

Just keep in mind that you'll need a System Card 3.0 to play Akumajou Dracula X: Chi no Rondo since I'm guessing your system came with a 2.0 card.

Thats a great price for what you got. If the discman part has issues you can hit the pcenginefx forums up and have someone fix it. They are not too hard to repair. Even with a plain cd system 2.0 card there is alot of nice games available to play, especially if you import. Regardless, you can have the TG region modded, or get a hu-card import adapter.

Okay, I've begun testing. The Hu-cards play just fine (thank goodness!) but my Turbo-CD won't spin. :(
It powers on and senses the disc cover correctly, so all may not be lost. Is there any kind of repair I could do myself or have somebody else do?

Frist off let me say great find! You mentioned the Order of the Griffon had no case, that is correct since it never came with one. It was one of the later releases that came in a cardboard box with a plastic insert.

As far as the disc not spinning, I am no expert in repairs however I can tell you that it is possible the lube on the gears is just old. This happened to one I bought. I just opened up the CD portion and spun the gear in it. The lube was stuck since it was so old, the gears broke free. Clean and relube and done deal. If that doesn't work, check the pcenginefx forums for further repairs.

Trouble is there's one very common problem that these guys have, and that's one of the plastic gears breaking. It happened to one I got and is pretty much unfixable without a replacement gear (which is tough to find).

It could very well just need a good lubing tho, so try that, but if not, it's probably that gear. Sounds exactly like what was wrong w/ mine.

How do I do that? Open up the entire thing? I see a couple of tiny screws on the laser assembly near the disc spindle. I assume those are the ones to remove, right?

It is frustrating to hear that the CD player does not work. I wonder if the store owner knew it when he sold it to you. I mean, it would explain the price. I also assume he tests stuff that he takes in.

In any event, even with the broken CD player, the price is not that bad, especially with the Turbostick and 23 games. Based on current ebay pricing, you probably would have paid just about that if not more and still had to pay for S&H.

I don't believe the CD player can be repaired. I would recommend just putting it on ebay with the clam shell case, system card, CD and cords and stuff and saying that it is not working and explain the problem. Someone will probably pick it up who needs parts or wants to try and repair it. You might get $25 or so of your money back that you can use to buy more TG-16 hucards. I would recommend Devil's Crush, Ninja Spirit, and Blazing Lazers. They are MUST have hu-cards.

Make sure both set screws on the dock are engaged (one under the unit, one next to the CD player). If they are....

Pull the cd unit out of the base, flip it over and extract the 4 screws. Pull off the cover (dont worry if the wire soldered to the sheild breaks, doesnt do much). Then, extract 1 screw from PCB that holds it together. Lift it gently and pull out the 2 ribbon cables (the plastic bases has to be pulled down for the cable to come out. Be careful, they rip easy). Flip the PCB over and you will see the 3 gears to the track. GENTLY try to rotate them a little. Be careful not to apply force to the middle gear, as it is the one that shreds and is a pain to replace. Pop it all back together, slide it into the base, turn the set screw on the side of the base and see if it powers up. If it still wont spin (but the PC light turns on), you probably have a dead laser.

I just sold a turbografx with keith courage for bin $55 on ebay plus shipping. So i would say you got a really good deal with all those games. I would like to brag that I payed $2 for the one I had at a rummage sale. That was a once in a blue moon find though. Just how rare are turbografx systems to find?

Well, I have 2 systems. One works in perfect condition, the other has the colors wrong and blocky, but plays everything. Cleaned, but not working properly. I used a sega master system cord to get it to work on the systems. Let me say the $100 you spent was a good deal, a steal if the cd works.

You see, the owner of the shop is sort of a jerk. He doesn't test stuff through correctly, and sells most games (and systems) that he knows of for a lot more than they're worth. How would you like a scratched-up manual-less copy of Tales of Destiny for $50? Or maybe $80 for a copy of Dragon Quest on the PS1 for $80? He has both of those at that price.
Anyway, there is no guarantee for anything used. You have to test it first, but he won't let you because "it takes too much time to hook the system up". A father and son came in when I was there the other day because their copy of Mario Kart Wii wouldn't work. The store owner only offered to clean it because used stuff isn't guaranteed. If they wanted it cleaned more than the first time, he was going to charge them $3-$5 for each additional cleaning. There was this one time he offered to clean off some of my finicky NES games with some alcohol and a Q-tip for $5 per-game! Lord. -__-

The only reason this set was sold for $100 was because he actually didn't know what it was (how? he normally charges according to the highest BIN on eBay!), or at least according to one of the kids he hired to work in the shop. This raises another question: how much did he give the poor soul that traded in this lot? My guess is between $10-$20.
If you'd like a comparison, he'd only give me $8 credit for my extra copy of Final Fantasy 7. The price he charges for a complete one is $69, and the price for an incomplete is $59. This same game has been in there multiple times in just about every condition possible, and it has always been one of those two prices.
To top it all off, I was lied to. Before my dad bought the lot, the story was this: "Oh yeah! It works great!" Now his story is this: "Hm.... no, I don't think the CD part worked. I don't believe I tested it either. Sorry!" I don't think I'm buying from him ever again.

Thanks for those Hu-card titles! I'll add them to my (already extensive) to-get list. :)

I don't know that you'd make money on that. Unless the boxed tg16 market has skyrocketed. I paid $60 for my boxed TG-16 last fall from a member on another forum and it was complete with everything.
