Sonic CD comes first is a lot of people's minds. "Sonic Boom!"

Popful Mail is a great, underrated platformer with JRPG-esque coating.

Amazing Spider Man is game you must beat in 24 hours.

Batman Returns, if you get past the driving stages.

Puggsy, Woody, Heart of the Alien, Pitfall, etc. Don't know if they're any good.

But why restrict yourself to platformers? Sega CD well-known for great shooters and RPGs too.

Pitfall is excellent, and the best version of the game (not counting PC). Heart of the Alien is a great game but I don't know that I'd really call it a platformer. Woody Pop is mediocre at best. Puggsy is good but very European, not suited to all tastes.

Batman Returns, personally, I thought the driving stages were much better than the platformer stages. As a platformer it's middling, but as a game it's above average due to the driving.

Earthworm Jim, Flink, and the two Chuck Rock games also come to mind.

I second the Earthworm Jim sentiment. The Sega CD version was my favorite as a kid. Sonic CD is also must-own.

Never played Popful Mail, but I've always heard good things.

You're all going to laugh, but I think Bram Stoker's Dracula's not that bad.

And I know this isn't technically a platformer (it's a beat-em-up) but Final Fight CD. I also like (another beat-em-up) Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin.

My personal faves are Earthworm Jim and Mickey Mania.

Popful Mail is pretty fun if you're into the Metroid or Wonder Boy games. Not as polished gameplay-wise but it makes up for it with some great voice acting and anime cutscenes.

Completely forgot about that one, it's pretty good :) A huge improvement over the cart game actually.

Heart of the Alien is the sequel to Out of this World and is a pretty solid game and much like OotW, it's very trial and error and can be very difficult at times. Still a pretty solid game and is worth checking out.

Sega CD continues to amaze me. I got mine in late '94 when it was basically dead (but still over $200!) and quickly lost interest until a few years ago. It was then I discovered the many solid and interesting hidden gems (at reasonable prices) the "system" has to offer.

Anyway, all solid choices so far. If you get your system modded you might want to try the Japanese version of Sonic CD with the original soundtrack. It's pretty good and no more than $20 in good condition.

Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure is pretty decent, although you get scrolling in all directions. ;)

I'm a fan of this game for SNES, so I'll second it. It's not for everyone, though.

I prefer Keio Flying Squadron

from the back of the case
"Strap on your bunny ears and save the world"

Best Intro Ever

Ditto.

Also Flashback is a good side scrolling goulash.

:above me:

They have this thing called Youtube, you know. Maybe you want to at least watch some footage before you find yourself buying stuff you won't want.

Game is probably better on X68000 (where I have it) anyway.

(Actually, I have to admit the Genesis version, Sol-Deace, reminds me also of a thread in Off Topic, on erm a more scatological subject.)

i know, lol i got that from the AVGN review of Sega CD which Sol-Feace is one of the games he said was good, but the AVGN isnt really a valid review source, so i looked at a video of it

i had to decide between Sol-Feace or Chakan the forever man for genesis

*cough* Chakan can be emulated pretty easy...interesting game, some hate it, others love it. Pretty "ugly," but interesting.
