Can you just make a wav. file of the tape and load that? Is there a standard way to do this or is it different for every system? I'm trying to do this for an ADAM program on tape that AFAIK was never available in disk format.

All depends on the emulator. Some will accept WAV files (like at a low bit rate & mono) and will convert the sounds to a special "storage" file (like a .dsk for disk or a .cas for cassette). Some will read the program if you play the tape through the sound card. Check your emu's Read Me or documentation to see what it is capable of or if they have info on how to do such a transfer.
