Looking to buy, trade, or cash + trade for a Wii. Not looking for a bundle with a bunch of games & accessories. Just want the console (preferably boxed) with nunhuck, wiimote, and maybe a classic controller. I'm planning on softmodding this, so it has to have v4.1 or earlier firmware installed on it and NOT have the new D3-2 chipset. If it's already modded, even better.

v4.2 is one of the easiest to softmod, no twilight hack needed.

Really? I thought people with a modded consoles were staying away from the 4.2 update because it blocks dvd-r's out. Or is it just new consoles with the 4.2 firmware already installed? Don't really know much about it.

I believe its the NEW systems with the newer firmware. -R's work great +R's are hit and miss.

Even better if you set up a USB HDD. This is what I use, and I don't even use DVD media any more.

Correct, a large USB flash drive or ext hdd works better than a dvd

I just ordered a new 500GB external WD Passport hdd, so I plan on using that. I just wanted the option of being able to play dvd-r's too. :-/

You shouldn't have trouble with -R's. What I have seen so far is that the dvd menu doesnt work well, but the movies play fine.

I'm confused. The 4.2 firmware shouldn't give me problem with dvd-r's as long as I *don't* have the new D3-2 chipset? From what I've read, dvd-r's can't be played at all on those (yet).

Correct, you should NOT have a problem if you have an older system/chipset. Dont know much about the newer ones or know anyone who has one.

Bump, still looking. Changed thread title to 'Modded Wii' because I changed my mind about trying to mod this myself.

Soft modding is really easy. All the info is out there. I did mine, including USB HDD loader and it works awesome.
Trust me, you will thank yourself for getting a wii off craigslist and doing it yourself (make sure it's an older wii)

How can you tell if a Wii is old and good for modding? Is there a Manufacturing date stamped on each Wii system?

Taken from a post at wiihacks.com forum..
2009 Wii Serial numbers after LU3884XXXX and LEH2676XXXX have probably got the new D3-2 chip that prevents playing backup DVD's. They can still use original discs and USB loaders.
