I recently hit the 300 mark on my Playstation2 collection. I have dreams of a fullset, but I also have dreams of keeping some of my income for food/shelter etc. in the coming years. So, slow and steady is hopefully going to win my race.

I was wondering who here is attempting a complete PS2 collection, and if so... How's it going? What's your game count? How are you handling getting all of your games lately, etc.? Feel free to share any details.
Collecting for disc systems are completely foreign yet really interesting for me. I was born and bred on carts and and love collecting them. Recently I've been getting alot of DC and PS2 games together and find it satisfying in very different ways than my cart collecting. It's also really nice to have a fighting chance at getting a CIB collection started rather than only dreaming of boxes and manuals for a reasonable price for most of my NES and SNES games

You mean, full US collection, not really 'full collection', right?

I have well over the 600 mark now and yeah with the amount of crap thats available for the ps2 Id imagine whoever takes on the task of a fullset will either a. be very rich or b. be stupidly in debt.

i really don't imagine how is possible to collect all that games.

I own about 40 games for ps2 and now i'm diggin in the obscure underrated side of the library.
Sure i'm not going over 30-40 title there..

I have to say that i don't consider (and don't own/buy) porting..
so NO Cave or others shooting games that are not "original" for ps2
same for beat'em up (i.e. third strike... in this case doesn't necessary means that i don't "play" it on ps2.... go out and try to buy the actually board ^_^)
no conversions from other console (i.e. nights or sega wonderboy collection)

PS2 /= Classic Gaming Thus, Modern Gaming you go.

That being said, i've got somewhere in the 450 range and have no current plans for them all. I know there are a few people here on DP that have well into the 900+ range.

Pretty sure there is a guy out there working on the full set. I think he's at 1300 but he may not be from the US.

I'm currently at 1,206 for the ps2, i do collect variants, and greatest hits, and demos for the ps2, and those extras i collect, are not part of that number. So maybe around 1240 including varaiants, and missing around 20 ps2 demos.

Dangerboy

God help those going for variants. :)

Eidos hit a fubar patch and was re-releasing everything with completely stupid stuff. Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness alone has like 6 black label variants, plus you have all the random ones like mini-guides, trading cards, LEs, etc.

PlayStation 1 was enough for me. I couldn't fathom a 2,000+ (before variants) library.

I'm sort of attempting to get a full set. Currently I'm at around 740 but I'm having a hard time bringing myself to buy a lot of the bad games out there.

Kamigami

that's the point.
On a big library like the ps2 one.. it's clear that a 50-60% are garbage games not deserve to collect

What is the final official psx us count? is there one? Just a straight set. When is an end an end?
I am curious about the ps2 I think it has at least another 4 years of spotty releases.

Here is a quickie does anyone know the last official us release of the snes or nes or genesis?

The last officially licensed NES game was Wario's Woods in 1994, but I believed the unlicensed Sunday Funday came out later.

As for the SNES and the Genesis, the last officially licensed game for both was a port of Frogger by Hasbro (it was also released for the PSX).

Fifa 2005 was the final PSX release.

It's something like 1248 / 1284 games. Demos and variants are still coming to the surface though.

After collecting two other sets that were 700+(Nes, Genesis), my hat is off to anyone who climbs the PS2 complete set mountain. After all, you could actually build a mountain with the games when you are done :)

I look forward to seeing a "PS2 Complete Collection Wall".

My humble PS2 collection hovers around 200, I mostly just go after the obscure stuff or something I will eventually play. The system has so many great titles. I dont want to think though about how many sports titles someone would have to buy to complete the set :(

I have around 650 for PS2, would be cool to get a full set one day but mainly now just trying to collect every platformer & racer on the console I don't already have.

I was around 700ish PS2 games, but I ended up stopping and started collecting PS3 games.

Although a full wall of PS2 games would be nice.

Four years? Really? I'm betting that next Christmas will be the last push for the PS2 and that it will be out of stores by Christmas 2011.

Any thoughts?

I have around 200 PS2 titles but I'm an RPG/shmup collector, so most of my money goes into those and that eats more $$$

I'm missing less than 10 RPG's for a full US ps2 set. I can't imagine the money it'd take for a PS2 fullset though...my funds are way too limited for that :bigmac:

G`luck to those after it :drinking: hehe

Same here. I'm at 268 PS2 titles, not counting demos, mostly RPGs and SHMUPS. I'm looking to thin out my collection, and will be posting a FS thread soon. I am going to stick to RPGs mostly, and am only about 6 titles short of a full collection.

A complete PS2 collection. I really can't even imagine what the total number for that would end up being. I bought a new PS2 game the other day and the man behind the counter at Gamestop informed me that I might be purchasing the last new PS2 game I'll ever buy because come December 2009, that would be it for new game releases for the PS2. You know, in that 'cause I work at Gamestop and I know things about games waaay before the general public does, kinda way.
I didn't say anything 'cause I most certainly am the general public and he is, after all, IN the industry - so to speak, but I remember thinking I wouldn't bet on it.
I ought to be content with my PS2 collection. It currently stands at 1,073 titles with a couple hundred of those being titles from Japan and Europe. I never once gave thought to a complete collection. I did that once for the original Xbox and while it was fun while I was doing it, once done - you invariably start looking at the rather large piles of games you have ZERO interest in and start thinking - now what do I do with this crap? :)
I'm still very much interested in PS2 exclusive titles and those will be the ones that - even if I can't cherish, at least I can sort of justify. Not too many titles coming out on the PS2 that aren't on the Wii as well nowadays. Unless they only come out in Japan and that seems to be where I get most of my PS2 games from lately.
A complete PS2 collection would be a pretty darn impressive thing to behold, I'll grant you that. But any person who acquired every title from the PS2 library that they had any real interest in would impress me too - especially if I thought they really KNEW the PS2 library in it's entirety.

Wow. There must be so much bowel explosion in that 2,000 too. I'm sure by percentage, it's the same as any system. But by volume, look out.

Ya know.... saying that on a forum thats known for its users being collectors of games to degrees that are beyond OCD in most doctors minds you're aiming for some flaming*.

No, Fifa 2005 was the official last RELEASE.

Metal Gear would be the official last RE-RELEASE.

Also in 2005, a few month after Fifa 2005, came Schnappi, although a German release:
http://www.videogamecollectors.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=239012&g2_serialNumber=1

but after that came Fifa 2005 Platinum (Greatest Hits)
http://www.videogamecollectors.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=267943&g2_serialNumber=1

And the very last German release in 2005 was 7 Shoot Games:
http://www.videogamecollectors.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=309717&g2_serialNumber=2

So maybe the same's gonna happen with PS2, as PS2 is still going strong in Germany and games are still being released for it..(Christmas 2008 the PS2 was the console number 1 seller in Germany, source: PC Welt magazine).

Not sure of the exact number, but the number of US released PS1 games is probably well over 1000. I remember reading somewhere that it was almost 1300 games, but I don't know if that includes imports, so it might be an inaccurate number.

Actually only 1771 since june 2009. I doubt that 300 titles have been released since then. See http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdatatitle_e.html for the offical numbers.

A full US PS1 set has 1335 releases...

So instead of me being at 60%, im at 66% of all ps2 games. I'm gonna count my needed list, to see how many ps2 games I still need, I won't count variants either. Just for fun, when i get a spare few hours.

Like most systems, the NTSC set is the most easy to collect for LOL
You should try to get all the localised PAL Singstar versions. My guess is that there are over 100 variations (different only in a few songs)

Agreed. Collecting for the Sony systems has got to be the most sisyphean and expensive gaming goal I can imagine, if only for the flood of shovelware garbage that gets pumped out in the final days of the systems. Once you've gotten all the good, must play games and are spending hard earned money on piles of crap you'd never play in a million years, it has to get tough.

If someone actually manages to do it, my hat is off to them.

When do you think the Online Rarity Guide for PS2 will start to get stronger (rarity rating-wise)? Does that start to get much more effective as games are no longer being officially released, or...?

Just craigslist caught and bought about 44 (30 I don't already have) PS2 games today, just that much closer to that ever-lengthening finish line!
